Default I hunted public land today

Its hard to hunt where every one and his brother has all ready been.
Theres more people tracks than deer.
I did find some rubs.
And the leaves are dry and sound like walking on corn flakes
I walked and walked and walked some more.
It seemed like 4 to 5 miles.
I put out scent and waited for a long time.
My legs got cramped so I stood up to strech out
And gues what happened next.
You guesed it the deer was about 25 or 35 ft to my right
And it sounded like an elaphant running away.

I said to my self I blew that.
So I go and refresh the scents hung in the trees.
Sit back down and about 4:30 I heard foot steps behind me
It went on about 20 minets or so then it vanished.

So I sat untile it started getting dark.
I didn't get a shot but I did get close to
Some deer.

Hunting behind some one is tuff.
Hunting without a tree stand is tuffer.
Espesaly when you only can see about 15 to 20 ft.
For me any way.

SO to all that hunt public land.
Is there some tips that would make
Hunting on public land more productive ??
Thank You !

My tip would be let the other hunters do the work for you. Find a spot away from the prime deer spots the other hunters will be looking for. Try to figure out where the deer are going to run when the other hunters go to those spots. Stay away from the people traffic and you should find the deer. Thats what I try to do anyway! Good luck...Jim

That's quite a poem you wrote. I'll agree with the advice above; when dealing with hunting pressure, either avoid it by finding extremely thick, out-of-the-way places, or use it to your advantage, like a deer drive.

Sounds like you already found a decent spot. You just need a tree stand.

When there is a bunch of hunters on public ground prime time is right at dawn like normal but then it dies pretty fast. Next prime time is 9:00 when all the gomers get tired of sitting or give up.

You want to be hidden and still when that happens.

Try and find out where these deer are running to when the other hunters in the area spook them. That is where I would set up. Get to that spot before the crowd gets to theirs and let them push deer to you as they are moving in, setting up, or shooting deer.

Scout & scout some more. I always hunt public land and use other hunters to my advantage. From the degree of scouting I've done on this particulat WMA , I know where the beds are , where the food is and the path the deer take to get there. This does take TIME in the woods. I set up in a natural funnel from the beds to the food plot and most times guys on the other side push deer right to me.
You have to know public land very well to be productive. At least thats what I've found.

Get in earlier than anyone else and be where they will drive the deer .

Ive always hunted public land for deer...best thing to do is go in about 45 min to an hour before everyone else...you need to scout the area out before hand..i usualy try to find a real thick area that the deer go to when spooked or shot at..get up in a stand and wait for the other hunters to push them to you...as Jack Ryan said the best times are just at dawn and i have found between 9-12 in the morning(when people get up and start walking around heading out for lunch) deer seem to be on the move..
