Shot Placement

What kind of shot place ment do you prefer ?

Me I like a standing shot.

I know some will shoot at a running deer.
But I just don't think I would do it.
I can't see how you could get a good shot placement on a running animal.
Not that some people can't just its not for me.

Soooooooooo what do you think ?

RE: Shot Placement

I like to locate inferior quality bucks than get them running straight away from me at about 500yds--then I just shoot their nuts off so they can't breed--It's really all about deer management.

seriously though, standing is almost always better--I submit though if I am forced to shoot offhand I would 10 times rather the animal be moving--doesn't have to be flat out running--just some movement helps me personally become steadier.

RE: Shot Placement

Being as though i hunt jersey for deer i shoot buckshot and i would prefer a deer running or moving...i dont kno why but all the deer that i have shot running or moving have either dropped on the spot or ran no more than 25 yards and dropped(knock on wood)...have never lost a deer with buckshot probably because i take so much time to pattern the gun and know my limitations...but standing still broadside at under 50 yards...just doesnt get any better

RE: Shot Placement

ive taken both running and standing.....one i wont forget is a doe....my 3rd deer...dad was gutting his he just took...and i was standing there watching.....4 deer came running through our thicket we hunt in...its a growing sappling thicket.....most trees arel ike 4-5 inches thick.....some only an inch.....but its starting to mature....and you can see "only the strong survive" take place....the weak trees are dying out as it matures...neat thing to actually witness....but they were running full speed coming out of someones drive.....i had my 3x9x40 leaupold varixII on 3x....and got on the lead deer and was moving on it like i was swinging a shotgun.....bounded over an opening and took her in the air as she bounded....folded in the air and piled up when she landed.....dad looked at me and was shocked i even shot.....and shocked that i did what i did....perfect lung shot......right where i wanted it to go.....i dont take shots i dont think i can make....and im not bragging....i know myself and know my gun and can shot it.....the deer was only maybe 40yds away...3006....if i know i cant make the shot i dont fire.....i felt that one..and knew i could do it.....and i did it......but you have to know yourself and what you can and cant do.....and follow your limitations.....
