Default Allegany County New York

I am brand new to this message board. I have read many of the posts and can tell that the contributors to this board are very dedicated, knowledgeable and hardcore.
I have a question that I'm hoping some of you New York hunters can help me out with. I am currently considering buying a parcel of land in Alleganey County. It is about 100+/- acres that are 2/3 wooded and 1/3 open meadow. The property looks very appealing but I have no experience hunting in that region of New york state. Are there many (any?) mature bucks in this county? Is the county overhunted? I know from the stats that this county produces a high number of deer but also there is quite a large "army" of hunters who pound the woods there shooting many, many 1-1/2 year old bucks. Does anybody know of any QDM efforts being looked at for this region of NY (similar to what PA is doing)? Any replies would be helpful........Thanks

where in allegany county ? I hunt near Cuba and yes it is overhunted in some spots with most of the bucks taken are 1 1/2 year olds no antler restrictions but if you buy the land you can set rules for whoever hunts it ( by the way i'm always looking for a new place to hunt ha ha )

A friend of mine has property in Cuba. I hunted it with him last year and he killed a 10 pt and i missed on a nice 8. in all we had a good year in camp. four hunters and 5 deer. If I were you i'd at least be considering it very seriously.

This property is in Andover. I'm also looking at a couple of parcels in Steuben County. They are comparable in price per acre. I've attached two links. One is to the property in Andover and the other is in Avoca (in Steuben).

Any input you might have would be appreciated. I have never hunted down that way.

I have hunted that area for 35 years. It has been a great area, but as in most of the state, the numbers are way off. 1 1/2 yr old bucks are the norm, with a few big ones seen and harvested every year. The taxes are pretty high, but the cost of buying is a bargain. I have since moved to Rochester, but still own 90 acres at the old homestead along with a camp and would have it no other way. I love it there. I don't think you could go wrong there, and the local population are really nice people....Hope this helps and good luck.

Thanks to everybody for their input. If I do buy any land down that way I'll be sure to be a good neighbor. It's the same here in Vermont. If you're considerate of posted property and ask for permission to hunt, unless the owner has an army of hunters hunting the land already, you'll most likely be given permission. Most landowners just want to know who is on their property.
