RE: 30-30
I hunt with my Marlin 30AS 30-30 and love it! It's a real sweet shooter! [8D] I use Remington Core-Lokt's at 170gr. Others use 150gr, while some others use 170gr. There's dozens and dozens of rounds available in the classic 30-30.

RE: 30-30
I love the 30-30 for deer and black bear....just about perfect inside of 150 yds. My experience is that 150 gr bullets have more shock, while the 170 gr bullets leave a better blood trail. Sometimes deer/bear fall dead in there tracks, but generally you can expect them to run about 40-50 yds when shot with a 30-30.
Any factory loading will do just fine.
good luck, ths78

The 30/30 is my favorite whitetail weapon. My favorite round is a the 150 gr. Winchester power point. The 150 and 170 gr. are your two choices if you buy store- bought shells.
The only two reasons I see to use the 170 gr. is
1. You might want a little better penetration for something like a tougher skinned feral hog.
2. Your gun might group the 170 gr. better.
Both shoot almost identical in my Marlin, and both have no problem completely penetrating a whitetail.
