Single shot slug gun Question

Am looking to purchase a Harrington/Richardson or New England Firearms fully rifled bull barrel .12 gauge. Has anyone out there used or know someone who shoots one? Was wondering if they are as accurite as people say? Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated.thanks

RE: Single shot slug gun Question

I have not used those particular brands, but I can tell you that mine (Remington 870) with rifled barrel is as accurate as advertised WITH SABOTS. Dont make the mistake some do and shoot pumkin balls or rifled slugs and expect to get great accuracy (its also bad for a rifled barrel). I shoot Winchester 1 oz. sabots and easily get 3-inch groups at 100 yards with open sights and no bench rest. With a scope and bench I have no doubt tight groups would be easy. What you basically have is a 50 cal. rifle and it is DEVASTATING on deer.

RE: Single shot slug gun Question

Dont know what all ya heard about them but I have the NEF model.Once sighted in you will shoot through the same bullet hole several times. From 100 yards I can hit dead nuts on the bullseye with the 1st shot and the 2nd and 3rd will be almost right in the same hole.Sometimes it is in the same hole and for a second you think you just missed the target.

As with any slug gun the are picky on what bullet they like.Mine loves the activ 2-3/4" slugs but just hates the remington copper solids. My buddies is just the opposite. His loves the remingtons but hates the activs and also his did terrible with federals.

You wont be sorry but a word of caution, this sucker is heavy.Like 11 pounds with a scope on mine..And kicks like a mule..

RE: Single shot slug gun Question

I do all my hunting out of stands with shooting rails so the weight wont be a problem, just the walk to the stand will be heavy

We have two here. My 12 deluxe and my oldest son's 20. Yes they are accurate as heck!
My 12 loves the Brenneke Gold Magnums (yes they are perfectly fine/safe for the rifled barrel) and my son's 20 is awesome with the Remington Copper Solids.

RE: Single shot slug gun Question

the 12 guage bull barrel ultra slug gun is awesome!!..with lightfield 2 3/4 hybrids it shoots exceptionally well..its a lil heavy but u get used to it..and idk what pocomoke was thinkin..its heavy weight tames the recoil down so it kicks just a lil more than than a regualr 20 gauge

RE: Single shot slug gun Question

I have a 12ga. H&R ultra delux and it shoots pretty well. I haven't found a load I like yet though. Mine actually shoots pretty well with rifled slugs. 1-2 inch 3 shot groups at 100 yards with basic winchester 3 inch rifled slugs. You just need to clean the barrel is all.

They are plenty accurate if you find the right load for them. Mine doesn't seem to like the faster rounds though, like the 1900 fps type stuff. They are bit heavy, but handle recoil really well. I shot about 20 rounds out of mine in one sitting and was not sore at all. And I am pretty little, like 130 lbs and 5'3".

Hard to beat for the money really. Keep in mind if you get the 12 ga ultra with the heavy barrel though you can only swap barrels with the 10 ga because that is what reciever it uses. The 20 ga ultra is more versitile if you plan on getting different barrels later.

RE: Single shot slug gun Question

I've heard so much about the 20's for deer over the years and great things about the H&R's - so I purchased a nice used H&R 20 Ultra. It is the sweetest shotgun I've ever layed my hands on. Gun shop I purchased the gun from stated its good out to 185yrds(if you hit em in boiler room).
Light compared to 12g,low recoil, easy to carry, and a real tack driver! Currently using Lightfields but might try something different next year.

What I really like is ease of loading/unloading. Load it and its safe until you cock hammer.Unload it, leave breach open and you know gun is safe.

RE: Single shot slug gun Question

I also have the H&R Ultra slug hunter deluxe. It's by FAR the most accurate slug I have ever used. Iown and have hunted with a Remington870 w/rifled barrel and a Mossberg 695 bolt action slug gun w/rifled barrel. Neither are as accurate as the H&R. Mine likes both the Winchester Supreme Partition Gold Slugs: 380gr 1900fps and the Winchester Platinum Tips: 400gr 1700fps.

I prefer and have it sighted with the Platinum tips because I feel they have better stopping qualities. It's topped with a fixed 4 power Nikon scope. It's deadly out to 150yds. It will kill out to 200yds but the slug really starts to drop at that range. I have killed deer out past 100yds with absolutely no problem and my furthest to date is a 143yd (range finder)that deer went 50yds and dropped in sight. The slug went right through (double lung). I would not even think twice about a 150yd shot.

It's not whatI would call a"carry gun" as it's very heavy. This helps with the recoil though. I removed the recoil pad and took out thesteel "tube" that'sin the stock. I feel it's heavy enough without it and have not noticed any more recoil. It will lighten up the gun about1-2lbs I use a sling that has 4 shell loops in it for easy access to additional shells if needed....so far that hasn't been the case.

Here is a pic.

Got one in 20 ga for my kid. Unbeleivably accurate!! Get one hole groups with it at 50 yards and MOA at 100. Best load we found for this one is 2 3/4" Federal Hydra shock sabots.

I've got a M66 super slug, its a single shot, break open slug gun. Very light weight LOL in other words, it kicks HARD, and I like guns that kick but this one.......wow. Pa, had to put one of them rubber things on the butt end to help ease the kick. But he killed all his deer with that or the ole 30-30.

I just bought a H&R 20 ga youth shotgun for my daughter and after all the info I found out I am glad I did. Wow if only other gun manufacturers would make a shotgun like this one. Heck I am thinking about getting one myself.

RE: Single shot slug gun Question

It's nice to see girls excited about guns, that's a cute picture.

If I can make a suggestion, get a good recoil pad and put it on that thing. Those guns are light and your girl is small. I had one when I was kid and they kick pretty good, even for a 20 ga. I was about your daughters size. I could manage it, even with 3 inch shells, but when I put a recoil pad on it it was much more comfortable to shoot.

You could have that gun fitted with a 20 ga ultra barrel as well, or the standard rifled barrel with open sights.
