NJ Doe Whacked for a Farmer Friend (Pic/Story)
I planned to stay dark to dark yesterday. I was settled in my tree by 5:45 AM.
A couple of high gust winds blew early morning. Remember... I am in a
hedge row in the middle of cut corn fields... so the wind is nasty.
Daylight broke... no one around... no orange at least... just me.
At 7:10 AM I counted at least 15 deer running/jumping/kicking in the
corn field about 250 yards away. This is the area the farmer said the
deer come from.
A bunch (6 or 7) ran in the opposite direction of me, but a bunch were
still heading my way. I decided to turn around and piss real quick
and get ready. When I finished my business and turned around... all
of the deer were gone.
Ten minutes later 4 doe ran across one of my corn fields... but they
were a little too far away.... 60/70 yards. And they were
running...not walking.
5 minutes later 3 doe were walking down to my other corn field. For
some reason, the big one thought she was smarter than the other two...
and ran the exact same way the other 4 doe, except closer.... 50
yards. About 7:35 AM...
She was running until I yelled "Hey. Hey you. Yo." She slowed down
and looked in my direction.
I shot. She put her tail down and walked 10 yards and just stood
there. Did I miss? I put the gun up again and shot... definitely
missed because I saw the slug hit the ground. I put the gun up again
(60 yards)... and shot... she walked 15 yards and laid down and died.
I let her lay until 8:30 AM because more deer were stilling heading my
way. But the deer just stopped and laid down in between the houses in
the woods about 100 yards from me.
Just as I was getting out of my tree to drag the dead doe out of the
sun... the farmer showed up. I told him about the deer laying down in
between the houses...and he was like "Okay. Sit here in that goose
blind on the ground w/ buck shot. I am gonna drive my truck and walk
thru that woods."
I was like "Okay, but I can see green No Hunting signs." He's like...
nah... I am allowed (have permission) to walk over there.
Ten minutes later at least 15 doe ran by me 60 yards away... too far
for buck shot. Oh well...
Ending of story....
I was pissed at myself because I thought I missed the first shot. Anyway... I didn't miss. I hit her twice in the boiler plate. Putting (and sighting) a scope on my shotgun was a great investment.
I had the hardest time gutting and dragging her. Two slugs made a mess...stomach everywhere....and one exit hole had guts hanging out. She was either heavy or the corn stalk stubs made it harder to drag or both.

I bought all doe tags this year. There are way to many does where I hunt. If I get them all, I will have removed eight from the problem population. Got four so far. Just had a big meal of chicken fried deer steak tonight. Yum Yum.
