I gotta Rem 870 fully rifled deer 12ga. I nailed a 140 pound doe with it at 50 yards on opening day this year and she only went 40 yards.
I love it. Not the most expensive, but its great. My first gun ever too.
Therefore I am no expert, but with a scope I bet I could cause damage past 100 yds.

I recommend the 870--it really is a wonderful shotgun to use. Get yourself a rifled barrel and some sabot slugs and you'll be shooting past 100 yards. I wouldn't push your luck trying to hit anything further than that, but it can be done with consistent practice and a knowledge of both the limitations of your gun and yourself.

If you already have a pump ( Ithaca ) then take a look at the H&R ultra slug in 12ga , best slug shooting gun I've ever owned and I have the 870 & mossberg 500. Its a single shot , but it only takes one shot to put a deer down. Do yourself a favor and at least look at the H&R , when you do , you'll buy it. I know I did ! 3" groups at 100yds and the ability to get out to 150yds if need be is great for a shotgun.

I have a Mossberg 835 ulti-mag with a rifled barrel. It's a great deer gun. My brother uses a Mossberg 500 with smooth bore barrel and he shoots his share of deer with it.

The truth is that each model is more than capable of doing the job. Success in the field has more to do with the shooter than the gun.
