Gun question

I'm using a Winchester Model 1200 12 ga. pump shotgun. For deer season I'm shooting Remington Sluggers. How far away should I be able to take down a deer from ? This is my first season hunting and I haven't got a shot off yet. I've shot buckshot out of it and I'm pretty accurate from 50 yds. I was just wondering how far one of them sluggers will fly.

RE: Gun question

Slugs are good out to about 100 yds. Since you feel you are accurate at 50, I would keep shots to 50, especially since you haven't shot it yet. I would definately recommend shooting it at paper some before taking on a deer.

RE: Gun question

our bulldozer guy shoots rifled slugs througha smoothbore with a peepsite and bead on his gun. he says with his set up, which he's very experienced with, he can shoot good out to about 80 yards. if you're not real good with the slugs yet, i'd just shoot at ranges you're comfortable with, maybe just 50 yards. as far as buckshot goes, i wouldnt shoot that far. i researched buckshot recently, and i would shoot only out to 35 yards, as buckshot really isn't any good compraed to a slug or rifle bullet.

RE: Gun question

Deerslayer, how good buckshot is depends on how you use it. Where I hunt we use dogs and most of the shots are at deer walking (rarely) or running (mostly). Usually the shots are within 50 yards, and at this distance 00 or 000 buckshot is very lethal. However, I admit that past 50 yards or so I would rather have a rifle or a sabot/slug combination.
