Question about my deer meat?
I butchered my first deer tonight, and i brought the meat home, cut the rest of the excess fat off, rinsed it off in cold water, and put it in ziplock bags and put it in the freezer. Will this be fit to eat??
Thanks

RE: Question about my deer meat?
The best way to freeze it is either with vacuum packing or my ghetto way of filling the ziploc back with water then squeeze out all the air so you are left with meat and as little water as possible. It is the air that causes freezer burn. if you remove the air it will stay good for at least a year.

RE: Question about my deer meat?
It will be fine, for how long is the question. Air, as mentioned causes freezer burn. I am not a fan of using ziplock bags because of this. Its VERY hard to get all the air out.
I wrap them in saran wrap TIGHTLY then wrap in freezer paper. I have not had burn with meat in the freezer for over a year, though it rarely lasts that long with my two boys eating.[8D]

RE: Question about my deer meat?
If you plan on storing a majority of the meat for an extended period, I would suggest either vacuum packing (thats what I do) or saran wrap and freezer paper works just as well (actually this is what a local butcher does). If you plan on having some soon, try putting your favorite marinate in the ziplock bag with the meat prior to freezing. Ensure you get all of the air out of the bag. This is what I do when I'll be cooking some meat in the next week or two. Works great.

RE: Question about my deer meat?
Air does half of the freezer burn. Water does the other. No matter what you do you can't get the water content out of the meat itself, but make sure the meat is as dry as possible by drip dry and then pat dry with paper towel.
Hope you enjoy it. Remember, medium cooked at most with venison.
