I have taken deer with a .243 before, and it did a very nice job for me. My cousin took a 200-class buck in 1993 that was a record for that year here in KY with the same .243, so I believe that it does a fine job. I just bought my first high-powered rifle this year, a .270, and I believe that it has more power than a .243 and the recoil is not noticeable when you are shooting at a deer. In my opinion, recoil is not an issue for that reason, and thus, since a bigger caliber has more range and power, it would be more advantageous to hunt with.

ok guys i think the 243 issue is beat to death, it almost seems like another thread here that should be titled---------- 243 deer gun or not love em or leave em-- now i know why my 44rem mag ammo is so cheap no one else burnin em up:D;):)[8D]

Every gun mentioned will work, you need to base your choice on where you hunt. If you are hunting woods with thick cover, it doesnt matter how far the gun will shoot, your shot wont be over 30, 40 yards at best. In this case, any cartridge will work fine. Now if you are hunting open areas that might afford you 100 to 300 yard shots, Id go with a flat shooter, the 25-06, 30-06 and 270 would work well, but a 7 mag or 300 mag would work just as well if not better. All depends on what where you are hunting.

I shoot a custom built REM 260 that was built on a CzechVZ24 action. Seems to work fine. Longest shot attempted was 290 yd and the doe dropped. I use the rem ballistic tips which I think they now call accutips. This thread reminds me I need to buy some more cartridges as my box is down to 6 after this season. Taken 4 years to deplete the 2 initial boxes. Course if I'm shooting the wrong gun plz someone let me know.

I also have a 30-30 Marlin that I take to the deep woods when I head there.

my personal reasons for shooting a .270 win-

My grampa always used one, and he was a dead eye when it came to shooting, as well as an expert(he spent almost 3 years in combat in the Pacific). his word may have well as been God's word. Also,the .270 is powerful and flat shooting, perfect for deer. I picked my gun and caliber out myself. Dad gave me the option. i think i chose well. I've killed 14 deer in 4 years of hunting with my .270, including shots from 9 feet to 265 yards. and as far as shotgun for deer goes, i'd pick a remington 870 12 gauge in some way shape or form any day of the week. i've shot my two biggest bucks with that thing.

i'm not saying a .243 is a bad gun. most high powered rifles are great out to 200 yards. but after that, i think you have to step up to the large calibers. .260 is a great gun, forgot about it. theres alot of great guns, but just some calibers shouldnt be shot long range. theres a reason the military uses the .308 in their sniper rifles.

All I have to offer on this subject is : I shoot a TikkaT3 Tactical 308, yes it is my deer hunting rifle. My confirmed long distance kills range from 300 yards to 800 yards with the furthest distance travelled by a hit deer being 20 yards from point of impact. I think the best deer gun is a matter of personal choice ....of course if its accurate distance shooting you are into my Tikka shoots a 3 inch group at 1000 yards using Military M118 ammo:)
