Which Slugs???

I recently bought a Mossberg 500A 12g slug gun.My question is can I shoot regular rifled slugs with this barrel instead of sabot slugs?I sighted the gun in with sabot slugs and I will hunt with the same slugs.Sometimes I like to just go and fire off a few rounds but the sabot slugs are a little pricey compared to the rifled slugs to just go shooting at nothing. The manual says they recommend shooting sabot slugs,do they recommend that because of the accuracy or can the rifled slugs cause damage to my gun?
Thanks,
JE

I think you can, but dont hold me accountable for it. I have shot every type of slug out of my 20 gauge 870 with a slug barrel, so I think you will be fine.

For accuracy with slugs,You should try several brands. Not all slugs shoot the same in the same gun. I have that same gun and over 4 years I found that the winchester partition gold ones, with the hollow point shoot the best. they are 2 3/4 ones .?Very fast for a slug and blow holes like a cannon.Deer usually fall right down

Rifled barrel - Sabots or Hybrids (hybrids are slugs that have a wad of sorts that flies downrange with the slug, acting like fletching on an arrow to stabilize the flight. Brenneke and Remington buckhammers are examples).

Smoothbore - Rifled slugs and Hybrids.

If you shoot rifled slugs through a rifled bore you will get all kinds of lead in the rifling grooves, and it is a pain to remove.

Thanks for the help guys.I'll keep an eye ouit for some of the Winchester partition slugs. The slugs that I have sighted my gun with and hunt with are Federal Ammuntion Power-Shock.They are 2 3/4 sabots and weigh 1oz.Are any of you familar with these and are they good slugs?
I also have some Brenneke slugs that the box says they are for smooth or rifled barrels but they are not sabots, are these the hybrids you were talking about?
Thanks again,
JE

Agreed with the partition golds.

They pack a whollup.
