Do you need the real pure vanilla extract or can you use the artificial stiff okay?

I've seen video wear it appeared to work. The deer seemed to like the smell!

colbea,
I wouldn't use that nasty imitation vanilla in my food(nasty stuff). Why do you think its so cheap compared to the pure Vanilla? I darn sure wouldn't use it in the woods.

Anyway - I've had good luck with Vanilla in the pure form. It is very pricey compared to the imitation, but alot cheaper than the average bottle of "Buck Lure" I buy the store brand which is cheaper than "McCormick".

I've used pure Vanilla many times.I also dehydrate apples and put them in a stocking and hang it in a tree nearby.
I've had success with both.

Sort of a DIY scent disc ?
Cool , I have a dehydrator . [8D] I wonder what they would do if you marinated the apple slices with vanilla ? Hmmmmm ...

I'm of the opinion, no matter how delightful the smell, if the deer have never smelled it, they will be alarmed. Stick to earth scents for cover and consider attractants that are common in your area...
I also use urine and musk glands from deer I have harvested.
