Quick slug gun question...
 

Been thinking bout using Rem. 11-87 from treestand but w/ the rifled choke in the end ....what kind of accurate distance could i expect to get without using a scope? What would be the slug of choice for this use?

Alpha, I just brought a slug barrel for my 1187 this season. I'm getting 4" groups at 100 yds. The main thing is find a slug that shoots well in your gun. I'm shooting Challenger rifled slugs, thru a smooth bore barrel, with a improved cyclinder choke tube.

Get a rifled barrel and you'll get more out of your remington, rem's is all i shoot. I shoot brenneke rottweils and they are great for me

My buddy has a rifled barrel Remington and it has been effective out to 150 yards. I would suggest keeping it to 100 yards though to allow room for error. Try several different loads to see what groups best with your gun. One ounce of slug puts a hurting on deer.

W/out a scope i would stay less than 100. That is a far shot with irons. I have a rifled barrell and can reach out to 150 or so, but I don't like to if I don't have to.

Oh, I read it as with a scope. Oops. W/o I would try 80 yards. Most shotguns don't have a rear sight and it's hard to be consistent. If you practiced a lot at 100 yards you may be able to be consistent but I would stick to 50-80 yard range. Try it at the range first to see how well you do and what groups nice. Save up and get a rifled barrel with a built in scope mount. They are worth it.

Alpha-- I shot a very similar set up for a few years a long time ago (870 with a rifled choke). I assume you are putting the rifled choke in the factory barrel with just the bead sight? If so, I tested that set-up at the range quite a bit with Winchester sabots...with just the bead site, you better not shoot beyond 30 -40 yards without a LOT of practice. I later bought a replacement deer barrel with rifle sights and then I got pie-plate size groups at 100 yards easily. A fully rifled barrel will give you lots more range...it basically turns your 1187 into a 50 cal rifle with a good sabot round. And it is a DEVASTATING weapon for deer. If you hit anywere in the vitals, you wont have to track the animal more than 18 inches.
