Smokeing
Ok first of all, howdy I just recently discovered this site and it is awesome. Now on to my question, this past weekend I took a buddy of mine to do some hunting for his first time, anyways at about a quarter after 6 he lights up a smoke right in the stand! I quickly grabbed it and put it out telling him a deer will smell that thing for miles and he started to argue with me saying it is a natural smell and it won't scare away the critters so at this point I just tell him I don't like it anyways so he will have to wait until we head back to camp, but once we got back we got back into the argument over the smoking so I decided I would just post here and ask for yalls opinions. So whadya think gonna back me up here =)

RE: Smokeing
Personaly I don't smoke, but I have known a few people who have killed a deer while smoking in the stand. Just this past Friday my best friend had to drop his smoke to pull the trigger on a 10 pt. So I don't recommend it but he did it and look what he got.

RE: Smokeing
Cigarette smoke does not spook deer, It actually makes em curious. I have had em come under my stand with nose in the air trying to find the source of it. Actually makes a decent attractant as long as the rut isnt on. It dont work on all deer just the ones that are curious.

RE: Smokeing
I'm a smoker and have heard both pros and cons of smoking---although I don't smoke in the stand. I feel any little edge I can get is what I do---and I've never seen a big ole buck with a cancer stick poking out of his mouth....:)

RE: Smokeing
Hmmm interesting, well he still can't be blowing the stuff in my face =)

RE: Smokeing
I am a smoker, but never smoke on stand. The only time I smoke on stand is after I have shot a deer, I usually light one up if I have seent he animal go down before I climb down and get ready to gut and drag it out. I usually hunt from sunup to sundown. My best friend in PA on the other hand smokes like a chimney while on stand and that SOB shoots the biggest deer every year on that patch of property.......I don't understand it. He is also the last one in the woods, and the first one out every day....lol. Some people are just lucky like that. So far in the last 5 years he has shot 3x 120+ class 8 pointers and 1x 100 class 6 pointer, all respectable deer for PA. There are times when I am hunting near him that I can smell his smoke from 100 yards away........

haha, any more opinions =)

RE: Smokeing
I know several hunters besides myself that have had to put a smoke down in order to shoot. Cigarette smoke does not seem to bother them any and may actually act as an attractant. I suggest you apologise to your buddy while he is still your buddy and have done with it. If you yourself have problems tolerating smoke, that is another thing altogether and most of us that do smoke try to be considerate of those that do not. Under the circumstances, I would probably have left you and gone to a different location.

RE: Smokeing
I hunt with several people that smoke while hunting. My theory is that if they can smell the cigarette, then they can probably smell you. THese guys get 25-30 feet up a tree and I don't think it hurts one bit.

RE: Smokeing
Well 1st off the stand were were in was a box stand on the ground not 30 feet in the air, 2nd there was no lost friendship there just friendly bickering and trying to prove each other wrong so I do not see why I need to apologies/worry about losing my buddy, hell we went back and had some beers and 3rd I do not like someone filling up my stand with that smell because I just don't like it so even now that I know it is ok he still wont be smoking while in a stand with me.
|
RE: Smokeing
So.....why are you two sharing a stand? In 45+ years of hunting I have never shared a stand with anybody except my 9 year old granddaughter when she goes with me.

RE: Smokeing
Read the origional post... he's a first timer
|
RE: Smokeing
I missed that, sorry but I had to ask.
|
RE: Smokeing
No problem, I am always trying to get friends involved in hunting, haven't had one that has gone with me and not enjoyed it, usually that's all it takes and they are hooked. Only problem is I have giving up quite a few good deer to a first timer so that they would get the full experience.

RE: Smokeing
If I carried a guest and he lit up in the same stand I was in I would have said, "Well hunt is over, hope you enjoyed it". He would have never been invited again.

RE: Smokeing
I got a nice 6 pt. a few years ago because I was smoking. Sitting in a ladder stand, and heard some dogs raising cane at a distance I turned to look behind me. When I turned back this 6 point was watching the smoke curl up from my smoke. I froze for a few minutes until he checked his backtrail. When he turned his head I got the sights on him and shot as he turned back. Sixty foot shot, he went 30 yds. Took out both lungs. I spend at least 3 days a week in my timber, enjoy the outdoors.

RE: Smokeing
I don't smoke while bow hunting but I do while gun hunting. I have shot many deer while gun hunting. But I havent shot one bowhunting yet (but this is my first year bowhunting).

RE: Smokeing
this always comes up same with whizzing out of the stand . IMHO if you want to do it do if you don't want to do then don't

RE: Smokeing
A friend of mine that outfits for black bears does encourage all of his hunters not to smoke while on stand but some just don't listen. These people tend to see far fewer bears while on stand than the non smokers.I can't tell you how deer react but If I can smell your smoke 50 yards away I would bet that the deer will smell it several hundred yards away.
