150 grain Failsafe for deer?
Hello, I've got a question for you guys...
A local store has winchester Failsafe ammuniton for 11.99, which I'm assuming is a good price. Would a 150 grain failsafe in 30-06 be too much bullet for a southern whitetail?
I've read they are generally used on bigger game, but the box said 150's had rapid expansion on medium sized animals such as the whitetail...whats your opinion?

I have heard they don't expand enough on smaller deer. Several friends took them to Canada for whitetails and had some pretty light blood trails due to the small exit hole. I think they are designed for thicker skinned animals.

I am not overly impressed from what I have seen of the failsafe on smaller game but try them if ya want i think it is hard to beat regular remington core lokt's for whitetails.

Hey CarpMaster,
Have you ever used that Remington 'Managed Recoil' ammo? I saw it in the store the other day, and there was only a couple boxes on the shelf, so I grabbed one, but haven't tried em yet. It's like a 115grain bullet I think? I figured I'd try them for target practice if nothing else.
and just to stay on topic, I just use the core-lokt ammo from remington so far.

I've only been hunting once, and that was last year...I used Core-lokt as some of you have suggested, but at 12 bucks a box for the failsafe I figured I might give it a shot (pun intended).
As far as the reduced load core lokt, I looked at them...I shook one shell and It seemed to have alot less powder, anyone know the fps on those?

At the price and considering the grain size for deer they are worth a try. The failsafe is one heck of bullet and I might add can be bore picky! So make sure to shot them at the range to see how your gun likes them. I have seen a few mixed results from decent performance to pencil in/out on the likes of deer with the failsafe...but they will work if you put it in the right spot!
For the 06 I believe the managed recoil is offered in only 125gr's but if you compared that with standard 125 sp, MV is approx 500 fps slower in the 2600 range(according to their load data) with the managed recoil offering.

PhillyCheese,
here's some info on the managed recoil ammo. Skeeter my bad, the 115grain is for the .270 winchester models.
first is an article focusing on the '06 load

Remington's site article

Can't find anything that specifies it's fps
