I have never hit one anywhere in the neck that didn't drop in its tracks. I have read on here where some people have trouble with a neck shot. I just plain old never did. Most of the neck shots I have used were from directly behind or dead head on.

well if you hit the esophagus they wont last long, but i would aim in the middle to the brisket.

The spine pretty much goes through the centerline of the neck. If you don't hit the spine, they'll go down like you did. But, I've had one come to and try to get up again, and one bleed out from the jugular. The rest dropped as if someone pushed a "Cancel" button.

If you sever the vertebrae in the neck the result is a very quick kill.If you hit near the vertebrae but do not sever it,the animal will drop at the shot but will often recover and run away.I have had to track three big game animals shot in the neck(not by me)and one was never recovered while the other two were shot again after long tracking jobs. All three dropped at the shot(due to the shock to the spine) but regained their footing seconds later and ran off.The vertebrae is a very small target,so I use lung shots.

It is not normally a shot I take.It all depends on the situation, distance, position of deer ,and the gun I'm using. Under 20 yards with a slug gun or 50 cal.muzzy deer standing still broadside I would and did.The deer I shot Monday with my 50 cal muzzy was broadside at 12 yards. The 295 grain copper clad hollow point almost blew the neck in half.My 10 gauge with slugs gets the same result

I've always had good luck with neck shots. I hunt NJ with 00buck in an area where most of my shots are 30 - 40 yards. At that range the neck shot with 00 is a killer for sure!

I am just wondering what the advantage of a neck shot is? I have never had a deer run after being shot in the vitals. Would that just be from knockdown power of a shotgun? I have never shot on in the neck to drop then, just once to finish one off because it was my first buck and I didn't want to ruin the rack. To me it just seems like a better chance at hitting the shoulder, but then again most of my shots on deer are running shots since we do deer drives.

The only time I take the neck shot is from the front. If your shot is a little low when shooting at the vitals from the front you could miss completly. Taking aim a little high gives you more room for error. The neck from the front gives you the spine, the jugular and a couple other big arteries to bust open. It's a pretty lethal shot....
