I am confused the deer is shot in the shoulder, blew bone off and the deer is lost. Then how do you know this is what happened? Assume??? I personally have shot one deer flush shoulder (shooter error I admit), the bullet did come unglued but it also took out the shoulder and did splinter into the vitals. This was not bullet failure and the blame is of my own doing I accept that. BTW this was using 130gr NBT out of my 270 win, the deer a 160 class and FD weight was around 250lbs. I will freely admit if you aim shoulder or bone then your dead right the BT or similar is not the right bullet to use, I too would suggest similar the likes of Barnes, NP, TBBC, etc. However I have taken a number of whitetails using .277 through .308 cal in the NBT style bullet and never lost a animal. My favorite shot on a trophy class buck is a quarter away, through the ribs into the opposite shoulder most have fallen in heaps on the spot. Even the ones that did muster a scamper were very short and easy to follow up on, never requiring a second shot.

Match the bullet to your situation and you will not have any problems as long as the shooter does his/her part.

Like James said "Bush Beater's" are a BIG MYTH, so don't let this be a factor in your desicion process.
