BUGS are eating me alive while hunting... I need help.

These stupid Mosquitos down here in Louisiana are biting the hell out of me when I go hunting... it doesn't matter if it is morning or evening. I sprayed on some Deep Woods Off and they were still biting me. I just can't sit still in a stand while they are all over me trying to bite me. The past 2 times I have been hunting I haven't seen a single deer and I think it is because I am too buzy swatting mosquitos.

Get yourself a bug suit .
When 25% DEET won't drive them away a bug suit is about the last resort .

I recommend the BugTamer suit. I use it in GA and it stops those mosquitos. It pricey, but it works.

This really works, check it out on the web. take a 1200 mg Garlic vitamin. bugs don't like it, the plus is it is also good to keep your arteries clear and garlic is a natural smell so it helps mask your scent.

I remember a past post were someone said that the Repel Permanone spray works really well. So I went to wal-mart and bought me some. I will try it before I spend like $200 on a bug suit.

I forgot to add that I was using coon urine as a cover scent... I think that the coon urine probably attracted the mosquitoes. But the permanone spray is supposed to kill them when they land on you.

i use the spray" no stinkin bugs". it works great.buddy in alaska uses it also and it had really helped eliminate the bug problem.another buddy went to the jungles and used it. said it worked great. better than carrying the thermacell around with you.

Get a thermacell. These things are the absolute best at repelling mosquitos with little to no odor. I turn mine on before I leave the truck and set it on my stand. 4 hrs without a single mosquito buzzing around. Anyone whos tried these can tell you they work like magic.

I live in Florida where the mosquitos are thick.

Take a shower. Not to sound sarcastic or anything but I found that if you take a shower with Scent-A-Way shampoo and body wash (the green stuff) the bugs don't bother you too badly. That and scent blocker clothing.
About the only thing that attracts them is your breath. The carbon dioxide you exhale attracts them. So if your scent free (as much as possible) and don't breath you should be ok.

oh yeah, what about that little electronic gizmo thye advertise on the outdoor channel. Its supposed to keep bugs away I think for a 30" radius. Sounds good but just one more thing to carry. But if it works and helps you keep still. Well ?????

I have been bowhunting out of a treestand for the last few weeks and the mosquitoes were ornry here too. You don't move around in a treestand....so even though the weather is mild, I have worn light weight-longsleeved camos with light weight longjohns underneath...along with a pair of light weight como cloth gloves. The only place the mosquitoes bothered me was around my head and neck. They can't bite through the long-sleeved clothes. Being a little too warm is a lot better than being eaten by the bugs! I just went to Gander Mountain and purchased a $2 hat that has a mosquito net that covers your head and neck area attached to it. It works great!...I sit for hours with no swatting.

One big downside to most repellant sprays is that the mosquito's aren't the only things that can smell. Deer can pick up the scent, too. I like to expose my clothing to smoke. Smoke is a natural scent that doesn't alarm deer. I spray my face, arms, and legs with 29% Deet, then add my layers of clothing. Leafy-wear is my outer-most layer, so that is the layer I cover with the smoke scent.

Go to Wal-Mart and get you a can of "No Stinkin Bugs", I use that and it has very little deet smell. I use the Earth Scent and the mosquitoes wont even look at you!!

No offense , but you need to study your 'skeeters a bit more .
Along with your breath 'skeeters detect your body heat , sweat electrolytes , movement , and color in some cases(they're attracted to blue) . There is also some supposition that they can detect electromagnetic fields from muscle movement like sharks as well , but it hasn't been conclusively proven yet .

Thermacell,

I couldn't beleve that this little contraption accually worked. So a borrowed one from a friend and put it to the test about two weeks ago. Here in GA we not only have mosquitos but we also have the little things called "so-see-ums". They are so small you don't know they are there untill they bite you, and they hurt worse than a mosquito. Anyway, I took this Thermacell, put on my bug suit and went up a tree in one of my favorate stand locations. Unfortunatly it is located on the edge of a 110acre swamp. So I get more than my fair share of bugs that hunt me. As the sun was getting low in the sky the number of bugs around me reached their peak. (I would estimate about 150+ mosquitos.) It sounded like Alaska in the summer. I don't care who you are it is hard to concentrate on hunting with that many bugs arround you, bug suit or not. At this point I turned the Thermacell on and waited. I took about 5 minutes or so to get hot enough to start working and in about 10 minutes I took off my bug suit and had on shorts and a short-sleeved shirt on underneath. I didn't get a single bug on me for the rest of the evening. There was not a single one anywhere around my stand. It was awsome. I bought my own the next day and have used it ever sence. It does have a little odor but I have seen over 20 deer in the last two weeks and haven't had a problem with them smelling it. It is no possible to concentrate on the task at hand. If you haven't tried this "gadget" I would recomend you put it to the test like I did. It is one of those things you will make room for in your bag of tricks.

I guess I'm skeptical about devices, but I am 100% USDA grade-A bug bait. No lie - I attract any biting varmint for miles around. People stand next to me and I'm getting swarmed. I just put on Layers and have a bug mesh hat that has no-see-um size mesh and I can deal with it. Of course waiting until after a good cold snap moves through will also neutralize the bugs. I'd rather sweat a little than lose sleep scratching, so I'll layer and keep a barrier method betwixt me and the little SOB's!

Wait until it cools off or make a trip up north and enjoy the frigid air!

Move your tree stand to North Dakota. The bugs froze out here several weeks ago.:D

I've been just letting them eat me alive. When I get out of the hunting cloths I use Repel MAX 40 DEET. I'm gonna go get a Thermacell tonight if ya'll say it works with little scent.

They had this discussion on the SCDNR forum. Seems like everyone there agreed that the Thermo-Cell works great. Bow hunters included. So I went and got one at Wal Mart. Hunted a river bottom that afternoon and when I got there the bugs about drove me out. I turned on the thermo-cell and within 10 minutes never had another around me. I highly recommend getting one.
