Cool pics. If Danny was born this spring, wouldn't he be a button buck? Why such a large rack for a buck born this spring?

nice pics sunset, great pic of "hot shot" and friend, jimbo hunter danny looks like that for the same reason hot shot and friend look different, genetics, and when it was born, early/late, being a first year buck dosen't mean it'll be a button..;)

There are several factors that make up the growth of antlers. I suspect, he is on a good diet, and had decent genetics. I have seen young deer with fairly large racks, it is not uncommon if the conditions are met.

I knew that at times, four month old bucks might sprout some three or four inch spikes. I just had no idea that they could be fork horns or six points until they've lived for at least a year. We never stop learning, do we? :)

No we don't. that's why I'm about ask this question. Once a buck, young or old, sheds his rack and a fresh one begins to grow, does it ever stop growing or does it keep on until shed time comes 'round again?

Will you have to worry a little about Danny when he gets older during the rut? My uncle is a deer farmer, and he says it's risky bottle feeding bucks because then during the rut, they have no fear of humans. He also said every year there are deer farmers hurt real bad and even worse killed by bucks during the and almost all of them had been bottle fed. I don't know if it's all true, but if it is, stay safe, they're powerful animals.

The rack eventually stops growing. But, I've noticed that when he sheds his rack his new one starts coming in right behind it, with the velvet on. I've got a picture of these deer from early Spring, I'll post later today, when I get a chance.
Closest thing I can parallel it with is our teeth. After we loose our baby teeth, there is one right behind it. It stops growing. (But, if you develop velvet on your teeth, that's a whole nuther problem, lol)....:D

LOL....welllllllllll.....a camera on this deer......It would be hard to shoot a deer you have raised. Especially one we have bottle fed.....

In answer to Cardeer's post.....I don't have a problem hunting wild deer after raising these. I think of it like the Indians. They lived amongst God's creatures closer than most of us do. They saw them face to face everyday, just like I do here. They respected the ebb & flow of nature, just like we hunters do. I harvest deer from the wild for meat to put on our table. I'm not one to be after a big rack. Even though that sounds weird being in the business that I'm in. I'm thankful for a good healthy deer to put in the freezer.
I enjoy the hunt whether I get a harvest or not.

Yes I will. I don't go into the pen any farther than I have to during rut. When I took that close picture of Danny I had pushed on his rack up a little bit to get a closer picture. (I was risking my life for you guys LOL) He pushed back, but, not too hard. But, it's not a good idea to get close to any buck during rut.

We don't cut their racks. We need to separate them soon so they won't tear each other up.

The picture of Hot Shot and friend verifies that all bucks, regardless of age and nutrition (I'm assuming they have the same feed) will not grow large antlers. I doubt if "friend" will get a lot larger antlers.

A pic of the deer in velvet...Hot Shot is the one in front. That is from this Spring.

RE: Really really really close pics of deer ;)

I went to high school in a rural farm area. I had friends who lived on farms and grew up raising pigs and cattle. Our neighbors always had a calf that thei raised in a pen each year and then butchered. I've helped my friends kill and process animals and I don't see why it would be any different with a deer. Whacking a bull on the head with an 8 lb sledgehammer is definately harder than pulling the trigger on a wild deer. ......well, I was a teenager, so really it was kind of cool at the time. But in a sick "I'm laughing so I won't vomit" kind of way.
