Deer attractants, what works, what doesn't.
 

About a week ago I purchased a well known item at Walmart called a Block Topper.
It's an additive that coats your salt lick, and supposedly draws in deer.
Here is what happened when I used it, though it might be different for you.

Last Thursday I purchased it, and on Friday, put a salt lick out in plain view in the middle of a freshly cut down corn field.
Poured my mixture over it as directed by the box's instruction.
Left the site, came back the next day.
The next day, all I can desribe the block looking like is a massive fly strip. I swear I captured every known insect species to man on there, there were no deer tracks, not one sign of anything 4 legged anywhere near it, though I did notice even before getting to the block a very distinct apple aroma, it was very strong.
Went back on Wedsnday, the block looked like it had been run over by a herd of deer, all different sizes of tracks all over the area, with a few very distinguishable trails comming to and from the block.


So apparently, this product works very quickly.

The next item I tried a few weeks ago was the Deer Cane also from http://www.evolvedhabitats.com
Note: this is NOT the deer Co-Cane but just the deer Cane.
I used the ready to use liquid formula, and used a spot around 100 yds away from the location up top.
I followed the directions as per the jug, and poured out the entire contents in a circular area, around 3-4 feet around.
I left it out there around a week, (no more then 5 days) but alas, there was not a deer track anywhere near it, though I DID see a bunch of other tracks, maybe this is a better racoon bait...
So apparently, this item does not work.


The most recent one I am working on is Secret Spot, a clover/grass food plot, suppossedly that brings them in.
I bought it online at http://www.whitetailinstitute.com/products/secretspot/ and actually got a 3 bag deal for the price of 2, so that was a good find.

Again, following the directions as per the bag I recieved, I spread out my food plot, no larger an area of 10'X10'
It did grow, don't get me wrong, within a week I had a pretty carpet of clovers/grass.
Setting up the game cam right by it, I waited to see what was gonna happen.
I did get some small deer, probably no older then a yearling at best, but it didnt seem to attract anything larger, and the largest doe that I saw in the pictures wasn't more then 150 pounds at best. (Which here is small)


So... this product works, just... not as fast or as well as I would have hoped to have seen it work.
At least I dont have to mow it, that's about the only good thing to it.









Anyone else ever use these products and have the same or different results? Please post them, I am very interested in these 3 products right now.

nice...i will try the block topper. if u are looking for a powder to put int he ground....buy the 30/06, they hit that hrd and it is full of vitamins. i just tried the buck grub and buck nola. to soon to tell if they will like it. as the weather gets colder u will see them hitting the things that u are using more. food has to become a little scarce. that deer cane sucks:) dont buy it. i will let u know how the buck grub and buck nola works the buck nola has alot of protein and fat in it. it will be a good winter feed if the weather is cold this winter. 20lb bag i think

i just looked on the site that u gave and it's called buck ola...good stuff. i may use a gravity feeder for it in the coming weeks
