On our hill whatever the farmers are not planting works best.If we plant something different they seem to come for miles.

Corn is good but they also like oats and rye grass. Also like field peas.

I agree with most everyone else. Corn #1 and soybeans #2.

I'm surprised there were so few clover responses. I would, have to agree, that in my area, once snow is on the ground, nothing beats standing corn. Rye/oats also really attracts fall deer prior to snowfall. However, as much as I like Rye/oats as a fall plot, and corn in the winter, they are made that much more attractive by having the clover plots that hold the deer in our area the other three seasons.

Depends on the time of the year.

Soybeans are great for the summer, but once beans mature they must get bitter, because the deer leave the beanfields and head for the corn.

Corn, either standing or picked, will hold deer all fall and winter. There's always some corn left in the field after harvest, and like farm hunter said, standing corn will be available in heavy snow.

Forage crops are good spring, summer, and fall. As long as there are nice tender greens, the deer will be there. They will even paw through light snow to get to it if they know it's there.

I would pay close attention to what type of foods are available near you. If there are corn and alfalfa fields near you but few soybeans then plant soybeans and vise versa. Clover also works well. Just try to provide the deer with a crop that is not already readily available in you area. Deer love variety in their diet and will travel a long ways to get it. If you are interested in planting trees do the same. If there are apple trees in your area try planting a different variety or plant either pear, plum, or best of all persimmon trees. Be sure to fertilize your plots and fruit trees. The deer will notice the difference. Use 10-10-10- fertilizer for fruit trees and 13-13-13 on oak trees.
