RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?
Yes; in populated areas. Archery season only is even better. There is no better way to get areas posted as "No Hunting" than let people blast away with center fire rifles next to schools.

RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?
Shotguns don't give the game enough respect. For one thing, if all we used was shotguns, we'd all attempt to take game at longer and longer distances, combining marginal accuracy and velocities with long distances isn't fair to the game. We'd have so many more crippled and suffering deer. Rifles should be used because of the swift kill, and the ease of attaining it. Too many "marginal shooters" love deer hunting. Take some of my buddies or my girlfriend. Two buddies of mine are lucky to get 3-5" groups @ 100 yrds out of their guns they hunt all the time, when I can pick up their guns and drop sub 2" anytime I want. My girlfriend just started hunting, she hasn't shot much yet, but she does ok, but if all those three had were shotguns, they'd cripple a lot of game, just like millions of other hunters out there.

Absolutely NOT

RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?
If I had the option of useing a shotgun, muzzleloader or pistol in populated areas.
I would use a muzzleloader or pistol and forget the shotgun. |
RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?
shotguns are for birds and rabbits
|
RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?
No - but give me my 12ga any day inside 50 yds!!
|
RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?
One should have a choice....
|
RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?
No ,but I wonder why the question is asked .
|
RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?
No, all weapons have their place in hunting. But to the couple guys who said shotguns were not worthy or that shotguns can't kill game as effectivly as rifles, you are flat out wrong. And to NOMERCY's comment, "we all" wouldn't be taking unreasonable shots if it were shotgun only, if a person doesn't respect hunting enough to know what his/her limits are then that is a personal problem, not a weapon problem. And that includes your buddies. The problem wouldn't be magnified because they had a shotgun instead of a rifle. A bad shot is a bad shot regardless. And barring a physical problem, the only reason for a bad shot is lack of practice, knowledge of their weapon, and respect for the game they are hunting.

RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?

|
RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?
NO i do not think only shotguns should be used while hunting deer.
|
RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?
No rifles bow muzzle loaders have a place but I still use shotguns for pretty much everything
|
RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?
no they should not
|
RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?
Shotguns have their place, but it shouldn't be the only choice. OUt here, I don't think anyone uses a shotgun.

RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?
YOu must hunt where you can only hunt with a shotgun. My answer is NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?
If you don't think a shotgun shows repect to deer. Just ask the 6 dead ones that were killed with my benelli sbe and 00 buckshot this season. Or the over 50 deer from the past 10 seasons. They will tell you all about respecting a shotgun. Just don't take a bad shot. Why argue on what you should be able to use? Use what they tell you to and enjoy it. I would use spitballs if that is all they would let me use.

RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?
i might be a little biased since my home state of illinois only allows shotguns. that having been said i certainly don't think only shotguns should be allowed. especialy in areas where it would be safe. quite honestly i don't think i would want to hunt in illinois if everyone was carrying a rifle! last but not least i don't think it is a coincidince that illinois has HUGE bucks and only allows shotgun hunting during a relatively short season.

RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?
I too am from Illinois and have used a shotgun for over 20 years. I also bow hunt and enjoy both. Deer hunting should not be limited to shotguns.
|
RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?
Definitely not
|
RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?
NO!

RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?
Commom sence questions deserve common sence answers,I also would like to know why you asked the question.Common sernce says use a shotgun where a rifle cannot be used safely.WHY did you ask the question? If some of you believe a rifle can be used safely in all areas of New York,You havn't hunted all ares of New York. When I get the urge to use the old "88" I go where where it is appropriate.

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quotequote:
Nomercy, it's very ignorant to say shotguns don't show game enough respect. Every year thousands of deer are taken in Iowa alone with only shotguns. Your reasoning is the same messed up logic that anti-gun groups use in saying that guns kill when it's the idiots behind the trigger that are responsible. Bad shots are bad shots regardless of what weapon they are using. Every weapon also has a maximum effective range and a person with a rifle could very well do the same thing, heck even someone with a bow could. It's not the gun, it's the person who uses it.

I agree 100% with you drache with only one slight hitch. I was unfortunate enough to get shot in the back with a 12 gauge slug opening day this past season in NY state where the area I hunt is shotgun only. It was a stray shot and believe me when I tell you...If I had to get shot at all (and I wish this never happened), I'd have preferred a smaller diameter or caliber rifle bullet than a 1 1/4 oz slug. Had I been killed, it wouldn't matter much, but if you're unlucky enough for this to happen to you, then pray that it isn't a shotgun slug. That thing drilled a hole in my back you can put your index finger in and knocked me flat on my face. Worst of all, they can't take it out. Can you imagine what a huge slug like that stuck in your back feels like? I doubt it, but if I ever hunt again, it will be where shotguns aren't permitted. You can take that to the bank. Yes it's stupidity that caused it on the shooters part, but the damage wouldn't have been that bad to me and it may not have happened at all if it were a rifle bullet that deflected when it hit a tree branch. One more thing. This incident made me think a lot more too. The NY State game commission says there is no such thing as a hunting "accident" when it comes to someone getting shot. The law's take on this matter is that if you pull the trigger and miss, YOU are responsible where that slug ends up, whether it's 100 yds or a mile away! Scary thought. To all hunters old and young....Think before you pull that trigger. "I didn't know he was there" doesn't cut it. Edited by - Crowpecker on 04/03/2002 15:28:56 |

RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?
drache, yes, I guess you're right. After what happened to me, it's kind of heard to think logically. I'm definately thankful I'm here to tell about it. The only reason I am here is because the shotgun slug traveled 180 yds before hitting me. It went up over a hill and down to me. I was unlucky to be in the wrong spot at the wrong time. If it were closer, either I wouldn't be here or I wouldn't have a shoulder left. It missed my spine by a quarter of an inch. Right now, I doubt I'll hunt anymore but I like coming to this site and seeing comments and questions from others like yourself. Keeps me busy.
Thanks, Vinny |

RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?
Thanks Natty Bumpo. I like to read a lot of the posts here. A lot of good stuff.

RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?
Why would someone even ask such a question? They are good with sabots, rifled barrels, scopes with the new stuff these days, under 100yds I don't think it much matters.

RE: Should deer hunting be only with shotguns?
Hey, crowpecker, I sure do hope that you will go out hunting again! As for your in-law I hope you smacked him a good one upside his head! As for shotgun only NO!!!!! Illinois is a shotgun only, no centerfire rifles, but we also have a 3 day pistol season,a 3 day bp season and a archery season from oct. till jan. except whilst us ersatz cowboys are out in the field . As for the accuracy issue, my 1187 with an extended rifled tube choke and rem copper 2 3/4 sabot can punch a 2 1/2 in circle at 100 yds. not bad for a pumpkin ball launcher! thanks, mike, illinois
