Would you do it?
If you were planning a hunting trip, then found out your guide was only twenty years old would you feel discouraged about going? The quality of the hunt and lodging would be competitive with anywhere else, but the guides age being the only difference. Tell me what you think?

RE: Would you do it?
No I wouldnt be discouraged as long as he knew what he was doing and would keep a slow pace for this old fat man.

RE: Would you do it?
I think you have to look at the big picture. He may be only 20 but that doesn't mean he's any less/more a guide than someone older. An outfitter is more than just one person and most times the guide is merely the person that accompanies you on that particular hunt. Most of the ground work/scouting is done by everyone emplyed there (your guide included) so I wouldn't be overly concerned about it. WR

RE: Would you do it?
If this guide was hired by an outfitter he probably knows what he is doing. JMO

RE: Would you do it?
I would feel OK if the hunting guide was 16 yrs old, if he/she was recommended. I know a lot of 20 yrs old hunters that know a heck of a lot more than folks that have been hunting for 20yrs. Age is definitely not a factor here.
|
RE: Would you do it?
i think i would still do it, but, on the other side of the coin. what if that same 20yr old guide was the owners kid. i may be a little shy then.
|
RE: Would you do it?
I have a 14yr old cousin that knows more about the bush, small engines, and fishing then I do at 30yrs, mainly because he lives way up north and his dads a trapper. I wouldn't want to use a 20yr old surgeon, but theres no reason he shouldn't be a good guide.

RE: Would you do it?
I just hope I could keep up with the kid

RE: Would you do it?
That wouldn't bother me abit that he's only 20 YO.He might have grown up in that area and knows it like the back of his hand.If your not satisfied or think he's not capable ask for another guide the next day. I think it's only fair to give him a chance to prove himself.Good luck on your hunting adventure. Ruger Redhawk

RE: Would you do it?
I think i would have a lot of doubt,at 20 years old he would't have a lot of experence but would have a great amount of stamina which is a lot of elk hunting, but those years of knowing where the elk are would be is kinda doubtful.we had hunted a area for several years and a new guide took over and we recieved the young guy for our hunt,he knew about elk and their habits the only thing he didn't have was the experence of the local area which to me is the most imporant reason in having a guide.half of the time he didn't know where he was at and the half he was asking us where we were at.not that he was a bad guy he just didn't have the experence.

RE: Would you do it?
Judge him after the hunt, not before. You could have had a 40 year old chain smoker with cataracts that drank cheap wine all day.
|
RE: Would you do it?
now THATS my kinda guide, dont have to worry about him leaving me in the dust, probably have to go and find him from time to time.
|
RE: Would you do it?
If it is worrying you that much ask for references. All good Outfitters should be able to give you a list of references. If he cant supply you with this then I may be a little bit suspicious.
|
RE: Would you do it?
Yep. I would do it with no problem. I would ask around to see how good he is at guiding and whatr kind of person he is. As long as you get a positive reply, Have no worrries. That's my take.
|
RE: Would you do it?
Yeah id go, I went out with a 18 year old for duck's. He could make that call sing! I was leery at first, but he produced! and I will be back.
|
RE: Would you do it?
NOPE AS LONG AS HE KNOWS HIS STUFF AND ISN'T A SMART MOUTH THEN WE WOULD GET A LONG REALLY WELL
|
RE: Would you do it?
Nope not a bit.
The guy I hunt with and I hooked up about 6 years ago, he was just 21 then, and I was a beginner, I have learned more from him than from anyone I have ever been in the woods with. Oh.. I am now 33, would make me 27 then I think. Bottom line if the guide comes recommended and seems to know his / her business, I will hunt with them any time I have the $$ to pay for the service. Just my uneducated opinion! Terry |
RE: Would you do it?
Not necessarily,Heck a kid raised in the country ,been totin a gun since 6 bringing home the meat since 8 knows his business.

RE: Would you do it?
One of the most knowledgeable hunters I ever knew was my cousin Tim, he lived in the woods. Tim by the time he was 18 had killed more nice deer than most men down home that were twice his age and hunted thier whole lives. Tim killed a deer every opening day from the time he was 9 and always filled every tag he had. His dad who was also acknowledged as one of the best down home taught Tim a lot and Tim took what his dad taught him and expanded on it. I would not hesitate having a 20 year old guide. I do miss Tim, God rest his soul.

RE: Would you do it?
By the time I was 20 I had killed over 25 deer with my bow, and would have felt very confident guiding in my home woods. I would only use a guide for the knowledge of the land, I don't want to be put in a stand he picks out anyway, so if he grew up in the area, I'd have no problem.
|
RE: Would you do it?
I agree with Cardeer, he may have grown up hunting! Good luck on the hunt!
|
RE: Would you do it?
NO WAY, IM SURE HES WELL EDUCATED ON HUNTING OR HE WOULDNT BE OUT THERE OR HIRED, YOU BET YA ID GO
|
RE: Would you do it?
I'll agree with Dan B. If the outfitter is a reputable one and they have confidence in him, then I would too. If they hire someone who can't do the job, then their reputation will suffer.
|
RE: Would you do it?
Yes i would still go, i'am sure you checked the outfitter real good, so if he thinks the 20 year old is good, i wouldn't worry to much
|
RE: Would you do it?
He probably knows his stuff and has time to spend in the woods to know where the game is. I know that I was pretty good when I was 20 because of the time I spent in the woods. Kshunter you are a young guy, what do you think?
|
RE: Would you do it?
I know a 14 and 16 year old from northern wisconsin (crandon area) that would amaze any bear hunter. They were taught well. They could go anywhere in the northwoods , find the sign , set the bait and have bear hittin the bait stations within 24 hours. Their dad even lets them pick the spot for the stands and hang em.
No , I wouldn't be discouraged by a 20 year old. "Nocked,cocked & ready to rock" |
RE: Would you do it?
A twenty year old could have had a lot of time to hone hunting expertise especially in a given geographical area. Heck, I remember back when I was twenty, I was an expert at a lot of things

RE: Would you do it?
Generally, kids who are doing that sort of thing are pretty under control... I would do it.. The only thing is can you take a kid telling you what to do.?? I see it at work, older guys who really do not know the machine will not listen to anyone, cuz they know...By the way I am an older guy..But there is no reason to do anything the hard way...
|
RE: Would you do it?
you all know the old saying: "don't judge a book by it's cover". that's my opinion. doesn't matter how old someone is as long as they know their stuff.
|
RE: Would you do it?
I'd get some references from hunters who had hunted with him, but I'd do that for any guide. If the kid has grown up in that area and knows better than anyone else then age shouldn't matter. The only down side would be that you can't buy him a beer after he gets you that big boy.

RE: Would you do it?
I would diffinetly do it.
