deformed rack
 

hey i have been watching a very large 6 point and a nice 9 for about 5 weeks now. when i went to camcord him this morning i noticed that his one tine is now curving over top and heading downwards "like and upsidedown U" now when i looked back at my tapes he never had any sign of this. i mean in a matter of a week it is now heading downwards a good inch or so! also he is becoming a 7 pointer :)


now i watched this deer last year and it was a fine 4 point and this year he is a has a good 18 or so inch spred and great mass however that one antler is bothering me. i was hopeing that he would make it to next year but i think i might need to get him out of the herd come archery.

do you think he might have did something weird to it and his rack would be fine next year or do you think it is a bad deer to have in the herd?? sorry if i am rambling on and on.

No such thing as a BAD deer. Probably injured the antler playing around.

Nope, I think he's non typical

Depends if you want non typical racks or not. I wouldn't just shoot him because of a drop tine.

I would focuse on the 9 if this is a 2 1/2 or 3 year old deer with a nice wide spread and drop tine. Maybe next year he will be a wall hanger.

I'd give him one more year to see if the defect was genetic or just a mishap while in the velvet stage.

If he goes by my stand I'll take him For where I hunt so many neighbors and there buddies hunt deer they don't live very long.

My buddy found a dead buck a few years ago that had been hit in archery season and lost. One side was a perfectly normal 4 points and the other side was a spike that curved down the back of his head and came around his ear. It looked like a big horn sheep on that side. It was strange looking, it looked like someone had grabed the spike when it was in velvet and wrapped it around his head. My friend still has the skull.

give him a yr .....see what happens......may be genetic....could be injury.......if it is genetic....personally i like non typicals id leave him my herd .....maybe you get a few more drop tines ....if thats what you like ...if not smoke his A$$!!!!!!!

My opinion the drop tine gene is the best gene to have in your deer herd, mainly because it is one of the rarest. Any time I see a drop tine buck, I put him on the "do not shoot list". I wont let anybody shoot a drop tine buck until he has passed his prime and has had time to pass on his genes.

yea i love drop tins but i have never seen one where it goes upward "normal" for about 6 inches then heads back down??? also this antler is growing VERY fast and none of the others are growing which leads me to think he was injured.
