How much boot insulation will keep my feet warm?

I want to buy some new insulated Rocky boots but I don't know how much insulation to get. Once gun season starts in will be 15-20 at dawn and on a cold morning, but more like 28-35 on average. I got tired of putting the feet warmers in my boots once i was in th stand last year so its time for some new boots. How much insulation is enough to keep my toes toasty?

600 to 800 should be good for your temp. range. you dont want your feet to sweat.

Not to mention wear two pairs of socks. The first pair should be for wicking your sweat, second pair for warmth. Nothing beats wool as the second pair cause if damp or wet as it stays warm. But...to stay warm your feet have to be dry with the internal layer of sock. ;)

Bestt advise I ever got was on a hunt in the NorthWest Territory...my feet get major cold...no matter how heavy socks or boots. The guide went to his backpack and tossed me a can of Arrid XX dry...antiperspirant...not deoderant....a fast spray and my feet were toasty all day...seems the issue was how much feet sweat!

I used to have a pair of 800 gram rockies but my feet still got cold, come to find out it was because of the type of socks i was wearing. I was just using my regular cotton socks and doubling them up. I bought a pair of Rockies with 1000 grams and a pair of Rockies wool socks with the thin liner socks to go under them and now i never get cold.

One more thing to consider, blood flow. When I was younger I would sometimes end up with boots a bit tight after adding that second pair of socks, etc. If you got no wiggle room your gonna get cold.

Bingo!! Wet feet=Cold feet!!
Grams of Insulation mean absolutely nothing with wet feet. I wear 800 gr, gortex boots coupled with polproplene liner socks and topped with different weight wool socks. If stand hunting in cold days (which during hunting season can get in the -30C range up here) I were in lighter boots for the walk and light clothing due to heating up/feet sweating. When at my location I switch everything over to dry footwear also makes sure my butt and feet are of the snow/frozen ground. Eat foots that provide sustained energy and drink only H20 never caffine which makes you void in turn dropping your core temperature. Lets not forget to keep the head, hands and kindney warm with appropriate clothing and measures. Blood flow important as well, small cirlce with the arms, winkling toes, etc. Boils down to more than one element for total comfort, miss one area and then you could have problems.
