the 30-06 is probably the most popular calibre for deer hunting. at least in the top 2. I used one for several years, what can I say it is a great deer huntign carttridge. Its considerably heavier than a .243, kicks more, knocks em down more. just abigger cartridge. Nothing bad about a .243 either though, Im building one right now.

Nothing wrong with either caliber. Main thing is to place the bullet in the right place. I would also prefer the bolt action rifle. I think the 742 had a lot of problems jamming..

The 30-06 is far better than the 243 ,not saying that it can not kill deer ,but it is marginal at best better for coyotes, antalope and ground hogs.If you use the 243 please limit your shots to broadside with prem. bullets only .I am tired of finding deer after season that were lost due to pore bullet / shooter / tracking proformance.
The 30-06 has a lot more margin of error.

The 30-06 is a great round. No matter what round you choose, you need to be able to place the bullet in the vitals of the animal. I have a 742 Woodmaster that was my dads gun. I do not hunt with it anymore but I keep it zeroed just in case I need a backup. This 742 has never jammed and has taken a bunch of deer. I have been told that lack of cleaning or improper cleaning is the major cause of jamming in these guns. I would not hesitate to take it on a hunt but I do prefer a bolt action.

30-06, noooooo go againt the grain with a .243 ... I have downed 2 large whitetails with it, and never had a problem. It is extremely accurate. Both deer have dropped with in a second.

30-06 will do the trick just fine though. But i prefer the .243. You gotta shoot both of them and see which one feals the best/ more accurate.

Go with the gun that you like the best, the 06 is a great all around gun, I've dropped deer out to 350 plus yards with it.
