I have read some good articles and there has been good comments on this board about the Savage rifle especially with the new accu trigger. The 270 is also a good cartridge so I would say you’re off to a good start. Good Luck....

They are good guns, and accurate too. Some have negative opinions about the scopes that come with the package guns.

If you are on a budget, check sources for used guns like gunshops and the internet. Then you may have a little more cash for optics.

I had about the same amount of money available and I went with a Savage as well. It's black synthetic stock and came with a Simmons scope. I recently changed the scope with a Bushnell, but I had the gun a few years before I made the switch. Also, it was a 30-06 and not a 270, but I love the gun and deer hate it.

I would try the 06 versus the 270. Also, I paid about $350 for it at a gun show in Bethlehem, PA, a little far from Texas. Also, the extra fire power from the 06 would do well with the added yardage you would shoot in Texas.

Just a suggestion....

Something you may want to check out is pawn shops, you can on occasion save some big bucks on certain gun.

No I disagree. Yes it does have a bigger bulle, that does not mean you have the ability to take longer shots. A 150 grain 30-06 bullet will fall faster than a 130 grain .270 bullet. Since you are hunting in Texas across the Sendaro, I would recommend a .270 Magnum. It gives more of a kick but it also gets alot more fps. I dont know how much more a magnum gun costs, but look into it. I have a 30-06 and love it but I hunt in LA, so its different.

If you can't get it done in Texas with a 270 Win then it ain't gonna get done. You have probably the best all-around cartridge for Texas with the 270 Win. Its not bad on recoil and is flatter and carries more downrange energy than the 30-06.

I HEARD EVERYTHING IS SMALLER IN TEXAS !!! LMAO.

for those midget deer i would suggest a .243 winchester.

80-100grain ....

i dropped a 5x8 idaho muley with one shot from my .243 so this would be perfect for
texas deer.....

As mentioned by Tazman. . .I drive by the pawn shops every few weeks all year long and have purchased a few guns this way. If you are patient and don't think that what you see in the shop today is your only choice. I spent 6 months before I found a great Rem. model 7 .260 for my boys. :D
