RE: deer rifle on a budget ????
The Vanguard (made by Howa) is a quality rifle. Accurate and strong, but a bit on the heavy side (at least in 300 Wby and 7mm Rem Mag).
The advantage to the Vanguard over the 700 ADL is a hinged floorplate and a clean barrel.

Here in the DFW area, I've seen a lot of Savage package guns for sale, synthetic and wood, and any one of 'em could be had for under $300. Saw one recently that was like-new, .30-06, wood stock, and tagged at $249. (I didn't buy it only because I'm left-handed and it was a right-handed gun.)
Good luck!
