What magnification should I get?

I purchased a Winchester Model 70 7mm. Rem. Mag at the end of last deer season. Now is the time to fit it with some new optics. With this rifle I will primarily be hunting whitetails in 'cutover' and on powerlines that can reach up to about 500 yards. My question is what magnification should I get with my scope? Will a 44 or 50 be better for my field of view to see game farther away? I just realized I may have posted this in the wrong section so could someone move it for me.

RE: What magnification should I get?

Welcome to the forums. :)

I cannot think of a more appropriate place for this so don't worry.

Personally, I would probably go with the 44 mm objective and something like a 3-10 or 4-12 variable scope. The reasonably large objective coupled with the better than average magnification range should be ideal.

RE: What magnification should I get?

Thanks for the quick response. I want to get this scope in the near future so I have plenty of time to adjust it as well as shoot some different loads to see what I like before the season. I have a 3-9 which works well on my .30-.30, but I know I won't be scared to take a shot alot farther with my 7mm. Anyone else have some suggestions.

Leupold vx ii or better 4-12x 40 or 50. Sightron 4.5-14 x 42.

MackRack, welcome to the board.

I have the 7mm Rem Mag and have installed a Leupold VX-II 3-9 x 50mm and think it’s a good match. You could go with higher power but I’m not sure if it’s really req’d. I like the field of view I get with my 50mm. I had a Leupold with the 40mm lens but didn’t like it as much as the 50mm. I also have the Simmons Aetec with the 44mm lens on my 308. That one also is pretty good but it won’t take place of my Leupold. Good luck.....

I put a 3x15x56 on my .270, good for most any range and light situation. Just be sure to get a good quality scope.

RE: What magnification should I get?

I believe the quality of the scope is as important as the power.
I also believe a 3-9 x42 is sufficient in any situation. Most hunting scopes
max out at 9 because you can still hold it steady without
a rest. Buy the best you can afford. my dream scope is the
KAHLES 1" AH3-9x42. The clearity and brightness in a high end scope
will surpass that of a low end with a 50mm objective.
Cheers

RE: What magnification should I get?

I'd go with a good 2.5-10 power with at least a 40 mm objective, bigger and it will let more light in.The low power will be good in the bush and cranked to the max will be more then enough for the long shots

RE: What magnification should I get?

42 mm is plenty big for an objective lens and it can be mounted lower than scopes with a larger objective. As far as magnification ,10 power is plenty for big game hunting out to 500 yards which is farther than most people are capable of shooting accurately..

RE: What magnification should I get?

something between a 3-10 and 4-16 power with a 40mm objective should be plenty.

RE: What magnification should I get?

Like many have said, I wouldn't go any larger than a 40mm or a 44mm objective for your scope. You would probably have to go with larger rings on a scope that is larger. It's not a terrible thing, but the higher your scope is off your gun the greater chance you have of knocking it out of focus and alignment. I have a Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40 and I just love it!!!!! Another option would be a Zeiss Conquest 3.5x10x44. Leupold VariX III 3x9x40 would be another good option. I compared the two when I bought mine and for me, the Zeiss was better. In my honest opinion, your gun is only as good as the optics on it and if you have the available funds....you WANT a good scope with good glass. Good luck.

RE: What magnification should I get?

3x10x40-50mm will be just fine. FOV will be slightly larger with the bigger objective but it won't make a huge difference. It really is personal preference and wouldn't try to steer you either way, in equal quality scopes.

However if you buy a bigger objective scope in lieu of a better 40mm (optically) then it becomes a diminishing return. Also if you use a 50mm with higher rings and it pulls your cheek of the comb of the stock then I would advise you to stick with a 40-42mm to mount it for proper shooting position and fit.

I shoot the 7MM RM, with a 3X9X40 Luepy. As others have said go with quality over power, the deminishing returns will not be worth the extra money on a hunting gun! Good luck!

I use a 3x9x40 I like it really well.

RE: What magnification should I get?

Unless you have remarkable vision you will probably not be able to notice the slightest difference between a 40 mm obj lens and anything bigger.
The 40's are cheaper by a considerable amount and if you can't recognize a substantial difference-or any difference- I'd stick with the 40 mm lens.
