I don't know for deer hunting unless you throw a rifled slug barell on it, but you really can't beat an 870. I bought mine 6 years ago for $210 and I love it. Easy to take apart and clean. I've beat the heck out of this gun and it still shoots good. I'd buy another.

ive never owned a remington 870 nor have i shot one but i do like my mossberg 500 ive got 3 different barrels(rifled, vent rib ported with 4 different choke tubes and an 18.5"barrel) for it so its very versitile and i havent had a problem with it yet

have used a browning A5 for the last 35 years, never failed me. went to a browning 20ga pump two years ago because it was lighter to carry. just purchased an 870, can't wait to run the first slug down the barrel.

RE: fav. shotgun
this might sound stupid but i have a buddy who has an 870 remington and it only jams up with certain brands of shells. we couldnt figure it out so we shot several brands of shells through the thing and found that winchester slugs would jam and not eject when pumped about every 2nd or 3rd shot. he used federal and of course remington slugs and never had a jam. shot a box of each and then loaded 6 winchesters in it and guess what? jammed 1st shot. sounds crazy but that gun just doesnt like those winchesters at all. if i'm not mistaken he even emailed remington about the problem. the gun is about 12yrs old but looks liek you just bought it and they couldnt say anythign except guns all have a "personality" and that could just be a fluke that it wont shoot one brand of shells.

RE: fav. shotgun
another vote for the 870!
I had the same problem with some cheap Winchester shells during dove season a couple years back. You know, those Winchester's you get at walmart that comes in a 4 box package?
I think the brass on those shells is too thin because it appears to expand to much and get's jammed in the barrell. I just spend a couple bucks more and get the AAs and have had no trouble with them.

I love my Remington 1187. My father bought this for me as my first deer gun back in highschool. I have since inherited the first shotgun I ever hunted with from my father which is his Remington 1100. He no longer hunts due to his health. That's my favorite shotgun. I guess it's more sentimental than anything else. I put a rifled barrell on it with a nice scope w/ see through mounts. It's great. I have a red dot on my 1187 with the smooth bore slug barrell. I use that sometimes still.
