Default Marlin 30/30

I have picked out my long range bolt action and now I want a short range <100 yds rifle. My old friend says the Marlin 30/30 is the ideal Missouri deer rifle. Should I consider this or a Winchester 94 or just use the Winchester 70 featherweight (7mm-08 or wsm) for both applications? Appreciate your comments.

the gun you already have would definitly do the job. however if you wanted something w/o scope for short shots the 30/30 is a good gun. i personally prefer the marlin over the winchester. marlin also makes several lever action rifles in larger calibers (444, 45-70, 450) that you may want to consider ...i really like my 444.

Well, I have never found a better reason to buy a gun than I didn't have one yet. I might pick another caliber than the old 30 WCF, but it'll work fine. How about a 444 or a 45/70, better punch that the 30/30, and if you handload you can really gain some performance. The 35 Rem is a good one too. But you know, the deer really don't care what you shoot them with, just hit 'em right.

As far as using the gun you have, well, that works too.

Even if you never hunted with it, a Marlin 30-30 is a good purchase. They're fun just to practice with, and as my wife says, "They're cute."

Careful buying a levergun...you may fall in love with it. I prefer Marlins and recommend the 35REM or the 444. If you don't want to ruin the "lines" of it, put a peep sight on it and skip on the scope. There's nothing like totin' a lever gun in deer woods.

I agree on the scope. Use the irons, or even better in my opinion, put a peep on it, peeps are easier on the eyes, if you have any trouble that way. They are also faster in the woods IMO.

That long range gun will kill them at short range too. The only problem that I see would be if it had a scope magnification range that did not go down low enough. I did have a problem with a Marlin 336C lever gun some years ago but I also had a lot of success with it. I guess it just depends on whether or not you want to spend the money and have an empty spot in your gun cabinet. Something about us hunters, we are always wanting another gun or bow.
