Actually, many of the attractants used today are some form of mineral lick. Take the deer cocane I have been using as an example. I believe it to be a mixture of salt and sugar with some other minerals mixed in as well. Most feed and supply stores as well as sporting goods chains should have these items in stock.

I buy mineral licks at the local co-op. You can find them any where they sell farm supplies , feed , fertilize , etc. There is usually a selection ,I buy mostly calcium and salt blocks.

The mineral lick that I used is 2 parts trace mineral salt, 1 part stock salt, & 1 part dicalcium chloride. All found at the local MFA. This is the mixture recommended by the Missouri Department of conservasion. I have benn using it for about 2 years now and the deer love it. It gives them all the minerals they need for milk, racks , ETC. This mixter will give you 200 hundred punds of of mineral for about $30.00. Dig a 3 foot hole about 10 to 12 inches deep and mix the mineral with the dirt. I also go and turn the mineral about every 3 months to keep the lick fresh. This is deffinatly a lot cheaper than the commercial stuff and in my opion offers a lot more than just plane old salt.

deer cocane is probably the worst thing you could give a deer . to much salt is bad for the deer. look for something with no more than 15% salt in it. vita-rack 26 is good.

I have begun using a new product by Oak Haven. I have placed the Oak Haven mineral next to both Deer Cane and existing stock salt blocks and the deer ignored both and made a huge hole where the Oak Haven drop was. The deer love this stuff, and it is great for the health of the herd. Like it was said before though, everyone has their favorites.

I should have mentioned that I also use Oak Haven's Molten Molasses as an attractant near the mineral site. The deer have eaten 1/3 of the way through a 15 inch log, with the molasses spread on it, in an attempt to get at the stuff that soaked in. Here is the link to the Oak Haven site. I admit I am biased, but only because of the results I've seen. http://www.oakhavenwildlife.com
I'll try to post a pic of the log with my molasses lick. The log in the front looked like the log behind it about 8 weeks ago.

Here is a pic of one of my mineral sites. The salt block has been there for quite a while and is still almost untouched. The hole in the foreground is where my Oak Haven mineral has been dropped and the deer have eaten away a big hole.

http://www.oakhavenwildlife.com also has a peanut butter attractant for deer that I am just trying out. I can't personally attest to it, but I've heard good things. The mineral is an attractant too, but it also improves the nutrition of the deer.
