Wasn't much of an article to me. I just shook my head in silent disgust when they mentioned the blood pressure of a deer on an operating table! They could have mentioned bowhunting, but they didn't.

I watched the report, I didn't think it was that bad. They didn't come off as anti-hunting, nor were they pro-hunting. Its a given that you're not going to do much to address the issue in a two-minute piece. They did have an interview near the end of the piece where a gentleman was stating that the problem isn't going to go away until people are willing to accept solutions that involve killing deer.
A town in Texas was noted as thinning the herd and donating the meat to charity. The comment regarding lack of concern for victims of traffic accidents was referring to those protesting the deer management program. The part about the vet sterilizing deer in the Illinois suburb was interesting. You can bet that most of the folks of that white, prosperous, upper-class suburb would be screaming their heads off at the thought of their tax dollars providing health care for poor inner-city children. But a mobile ambulance to sterilize deer is A-O-K.
What I would have expected to see included in this report are some hard facts, like 100 people die each year in car/deer collisions, and that those collisions result in $1.1 billion in property damage.

just a case in point - in NY there is a lot of hunting and there are a lot of deer/car accidents (we need to hunt harder and better, I guess!!)
NY (certain groups) has kicked around proposals about deer sterilization. It is expensive and IMO very impractical. One small community (wealthy too) may see some results by trying it, but on a large scale I don't think it is feasable (they could also "hire" some bowhunters to help with their problems and save a bunch of money). In my book a dead deer is a sterile deer. The other problem is the fact that many hunters refuse to take doe. Killing 1,2,...10 bucks doesn't do a bit of good if no doe are taken (but this is a whole other can of worms)

I used to live in the south suburbs of Chicago (18 yrs worth) and I remember when this whole thing started a few years ago. The citizens made such a stink about the overpopulation of deer. they wanted to state to fix it but protested when Illinois was goinng to bring in sharpshooters. Instead, they decided on this sterilzation. My understanding that it was going to be a test bed for the rest of the country. From what I remember (I don't know if they mentioned it last night as I wasn't aware of the show) teh cost per deer of the sterilization was 200K. and that was a combo of state and fed tax money.
I think that is nuts. (sarcasm coming up)....let's spend 200K of the taxpayer's money PER DEER rather than make money selling hunting licenses? and the state could probably institute (just like the state of alaska) a bowhunter proficiency exam that they charge suburb hunters and make an extra buck (no pun intended).

Wow 200gz for i deer. That is really steeep. Now lets make a comparison.
200gz for a deer
or
50 cents for a bullet, and it will also give meat to whom ever needs it.
HHHMMM...i don't think you need four years of college to fiqure that one out.
Isn't that also screwing around w/ nature a little to much. Whats going to be next. In areas where thier is low populations of deer are they going to give the bucks viagra?

The people that want deer relocated or sterilized should be willing to pay for it. If they are not, than they should shut up and let hunters pay for tags and take care of the problem. Just think how much money the state would make if they made more urban areas available to bowhunters.

I am not sure how many of you are familiar at all with the outlying areas of Chicago, but you mayhave seen the forest preserves that cook and will counties have. ( I would guess the north siders have them too). these are just choked full of deer that do nothing but get hit by cars. driving to my girlfriend's (now my wife) house, I saw 4 bucks, 3 eight ptr's and one bigger. this is right next to LaGrange Road, aka Manheim, aka, rt. 45. very busy street just down the road for I55 (stevenson). So, imagine if the state had a forest preserve access fee of 50 bucks. with all the forest preserve land, put in 1000 hunters (at least) around Chicago, that's 50 grand to use for Hunter's helping the hungry, or any other program, such as allowing the state to buy more land..slowly but surely for more hunter access.
It just pains me to see land that can't be used....
