The .223 is legal in some states, but that still does not make it a deer caliber!
Being as you are going to be spending money anyway, why not buy a real deer caliber! .243 for a bare minimum and better yet something in .260 on up!

.233 is great for varmints too light for deer. .243 is getting better but I would go with a .260 great for deer , if your a little heavy for varmints thats OK.

243 will fit the bill nicely. Light recoil and dual purpose. I prefer a 257 Roberts as a dual purpose gun, but I reload so ammo's not a problem. Get the 243, 100gr loads for deer and 75gr loads for varmint.

.243 or larger, but get a quality scope.

take-em,
You can never use too much rifle. My selection would be a 25.06 in a Savage rifle and the best scope you can afford.

A lot of people like the .243, but it's a marginal caliber for deer.

A 25.06 has the same ballistics of a .22-250, but it can shoot twice as much bullet weight. It also has the versatility of a 90gr. bullet for varmints or 120gr. bullet for deer, pronghorn or black bear.

Good luck with your choices!
Good hunting, Bowhunter57
