Buck to doe ratio. Don't count the yearlings.
I was talking with a local game warden and the topic of buck to doe ratio came up. He say's you realize you don't count yearlings in the ratio. I looked at him kinda weird and then thought about it. It makes sense you can't tell when your counting them in fields which of the yearlings are male or female.
He went on to say that's why alot time people are saying it's 8-1 when in reality it's a lot lower.

He can't tell the difference between buck and doe yearlings? I find that pretty hard to believe, based on my experiences. Where I hunt, bucks have very distinctive facial markings. Maybe it is different elsewhere.

The button bucks have a flat head. The does are rounded. Usually more distinct durring fall/winter when the buttons are largest.

I sure as heck never noticed a difference but then I don't consider myself anything more than mildly knowledgable with this type of issue.
Good point though Charlie. Next time we go spotlighting I will try to take note of this and see how it impacts the ratios I normally get.
