my brother-in-law has one and loves it, has a 3x9 tasco on it ( i think), but he shoots 160-180's, i've shot it many times and its a very accurate shooting rifle.oh i almost forgot his is also in 30-06.

I got the old rem model 742 with a bushnell scope on it and love it,shot many deer with it.Its a carbine barrel model and i shoot 150 grain win silver-tips.works great here in the bush. Some friends use 180 grain soft points and swear by them.Sorry the scope is 1.5x5

the old 742 is the first large rifle i used to hunt with when i was a kid. i had good eye sight and never put a scope on it. have taken deer/elk out to about 400 yards, it's a great shooter. i still use it with the open sites mainly in timber and the brush ...helps my confidence when hunting thick cover to have the semi-auto. it has a short barrel on it to making it easy to handle.
i've never been to picky on bullets and generally shoot whatever was on sale. open range hunting would probally use a 150 grain and close up probally use the 180 grain.
regardless of the bullets would highly recommend this gun to anyone.
