Little Brother's First Deer

I got my 10 year old brother a .223 for Christmas and took him on his first deer hunt last week in West Texas.
The first picture is his first ever deer; we were walking to the blind and had gone about 100 yards when I saw what I thought were two does trotting south along the fence line. We hid behind a tree that had a limb that he could use for a rifle rest. The deer came to the corner of the fence and started coming east towards us along the fence. Jake had his rifle up and was aiming at the deer, but he was too nervous to shoot. The deer started getting nervous and I whispered for him to aim at the front deer's front shoulder and shoot just like we has been doing at the range. He shot and the lead deer dropped in its tracks. He actually hit the deer in the neck. The deer was at 120 yards and when we looked it was not a doe, but a buck that had already shed its antlers. (We tagged it as a buck.)
The second picture is of his second deer. I told him we were not going to shoot another deer unless he was big enough to be mounted. For the next four days we saw nothing but does and small bucks, then on our last afternoon we were in a ground blind and this eight pointer came out. I have shot a lot of deer in my life, but I have never had a case of buck fever like I had while we were trying to get a shot at this deer. Jake ended up shooting the deer at 105 yards and hitting him in the heart. The deer ran about 150 yards and Jake kept saying "I missed...I missed." I was sure he had hit it from the deer’s reaction after the shot. When the deer dropped Jake was so excited he couldn't even speak. This buck is a young eight point with a 15" spread. It is going to look great on his wall.

;) Nice going big brother. You did some great things for "The Jakester". 1st. you give him a .223, then you let him do the shooting. I know the young man has been trained well. 2 shots/2 bucks!!! You fellas will have those memories for life Congrats to both of you.
