My vote also goes to the 7mm ultramag. Plenty of load options for any game. Shoots very flat and packs a hell of a puch. Recoil not too bad. I think any of your choices will do though.

I guess that what everyone is saying is that you need to get a .303030067mm in a 308 and your problems will be solved.;)

a note on those "silly" looking plastic stocks.

A good friend of mine (one of the 7mm and .17 cal guys) that shoots a REAL lot says that the synthetic stocks are less prone to moisture/huidty related issues. If a wooden stock isn't sealed 100% it can swell and throw the barrel bedding off, which of course moves the point of bullet impact - this can (supposedly) be quite a bit when you get out to the longer yardages.

Also, at least for me, it's nearly heartbreaking when a nice new wood stock gets gouged, scraped, or scratched. Personally, I don't think I'll be as upset about it when it happens to a synth. stock.

It's true that wooden stocks can absorb moisture and end up warping or swelling. Synthetics are the way to go in humid regions.

I just don't think the synthetic stocks look like a real gun to me that's all.

I'm sure they do a great job.........heck, my muzzleloader (CVA Optima) has a synthetic stock and it shoots and carries great.

I am just a sucker for a shiney beautiful wood grain stock I guess.

I will have the gun forever and the price doesn't go up dramatically for wood so I can live with that.

Oh, don't get me wrong - as far as looks go, I like the wood much better too. But, (and I hate to admit this), my new stainless model 7 looks pretty sharp - the contrast between the gun and the black stock is pretty sharp.

I like those fancy shiny stocks too ... on the shelf. I don't think I'd ever dare carry one into the woods. Something to consider also is if it's your only rifle would you take it out in bad weather if you can honestly say yeas then go for it but if you're the least bit hesitant then rethink about the synthetic as when you book your hunting trip you can't pick what kind of weather and have to hit what's being pitched.

I'm particular to the 06 as well but lately I have been wanting a 7mm Shooting Times Western. You can get it from different manufactures but it's pricy. You can shoot 120 grains from it all the way up to and maybe past 175 (not sure). However ammo could be a factor in price and availability if your not prepared.
