Input..I had too put a deer down that was hit..input

I wanted to get some fellow hunters input about a situation I find myself in often.
A few weeks back during the 3rd day of the Pa. rifle season. My wife and I were going to a local reastaurant when a small button buck was hit by the car we were following on a small two-lane highway close to my central Pa. house. It jumped from the bank and a teenage girl hit it with her car and rolled it under the car breaking the deers back and it layed in the middle of the two-lane highway stopping all traffic. I stopped my Jeep and my wife got out and dirrected traffic. The girl was upset and I went to get the deer off the road. A lady in the on-coming pulled her car up to stop traffic. I couldnt move the deer because it was alive and bawing trying to drag itself across the road with no effect. I knew I had to put the deer down and I told the lady in the on-coming lane, she agreed and would keep the lined up cars behind her back.
It was sad to see the strugglling deer in pain so I quickly pulled my North American Arms 5-shot 22cal. from my pocket and got behind the deer in the direction of the cornfield he came out of. I put the gun 12" from its head and shot it behind the ear killing it instantly.
I then quickly pulled the dead deer across the road to get the traffic moving.
From the time I stopped the Jeep to the time I got the deer off the road took about 2 min. A lady that was in a mini-van that was waiting in line started to swear and call me names because I shot the deer infront of her kids. They were back about 50yards behind the lady that was stopping traffic for me.
I have put alot of deer down along the road from being hit and I never once heard anything but thanks for doing it and being humane about it. I tried to tell the lady that the deers back was broken and I couldnt move the deer because it was in pain. She continued to swear at me in front of her kids and I then took control of the situation and told her to keep moving and get out of hear. She swore at my wife as well as she drove away and my wife was calm and told her to keep moving. I wouldnt have done it any different if I had to do over again. I dont like to put deer down and having a lady curse me out doesnt make the task any eaiser.
Would you have done anything different??

;) Mystro, good job my friend. Only thing I would have done different is to explain to the screamer that real life happens and when it happens people have to react not scream. Sorry lady but I did'nt want to have your kids nitemaring over a deers slow agonizing death.

You did the right thing.

I keep my Buck knife in my car at this time of the year for the same reason, and wouldn't hesitate to use it should such a situation arise.

Mystro, guess what she would have seen when the Hwy. Police showed up, except instead of a little plink it would have been a gloc or pump shoutgun. You did the right think in both cases, kept your cool and tried to explain to the bumbling idiot the reasons of your actions. The only thing I may have calmly point out was her language in front of the youngin', "You kiss your kids with that mouth!!!!" comment always works well:D Funny how it offends her and the kids to see a deer humanily put down but yet she can teach them all the new nice words mommy says to strangers[:'(]...just wait till they tell the Teacher to shove it in school[:o] Not my little suzy or billy:(

Thanks, I never go anywhere without my...

Little NAA 5-shot. Many people told me that She would have realy freaked out if I were to pull out my Buck knife and slit its throat like I do sometimes in bow season. It bothered me abit on how selfish people can be in situations like that especlally in a big pro-hunting state as Pa.

I would have done the same as would most people I know. But as in case of this lady some people just don't get it.

Doesn't sound to me the lady was to worried about what was happening in front of her kids if she acted like that. Some people are such idiots. And I and most people would have done the same thing as you did.

i agree you did the right thing but you did it at the wrong time if you did know each and every person sitting there waiting your probably lucky they did not have you arrested , any place i know about it is not legal to shoot a gun on the road , and we all know there are some people who just go nuts about seeing this kind of stuff

Good Job! I would have only told the lady something different: "Shut Up! Just cause you can't deal with life on a daily basis, and are most likely not a vegetarian, why should doing what needs done be a terrible thing?"

Good job. I had to do the same thing back in early Nov. A buddy of mine and myself had just finished up hunting and were leaving the state property we were on and about a hundred yards from the parking area on the main road, two cars were parked on the shoulder. We both stopped and these two younger women had hit a button and they were maybe interested in taking it to the vet to try and rehab it. We told them unless they were independently wealthy, the deer didn't have a chance. 3 broken legs and found after butchering a broken back and pelvis. So I asked if anybody wanted it, the 2 girls and another guy at the scene said no, so I went back to the truck, got my knife and bled him out through the neck. You have to believe your doing the right thing by putting it out of the pain and slow death which will follow. Besides, a hit deer tastes just as good as any other!
