About 20 years ago we were dog hunting for deer and I had a stand overlooking a large cut soybean field. A doe was running across the field almost to the other side, about 300 yards away, with a pack of walkers about a hundred yards behind her. I took an offhand shot and piled her up. A little luck helped out.

Best shot I ever saw was my Father. He shot two bucks on a dead run at 100 yards with two shots from an open sight model 94 30-30. I was in awe, he was dead calm and didn't seem to think it was such a big deal. I still see it replay in my mind 25 years later. Awesome.

RE: What's your best or most difficult shot on game, you can remember?
Many moons ago, I was about 17 yo so about a decade. A buddy and I were headed out to our stands when we turned into the Big Oatfield (500+acres flat oatfierld) and there were about 20 turkeys under a big lone oak tree about 100 yards out. I stumbled out of the pickup in a stupor (our lease has only produced a half dozen turkey kills in 14 years) and grabbed my .270 Win Mag. They hauled ass, running and flapping and trying to get some air and distance from two teenagers with rifles. I picked one out at random and let off a "sport shot" and reduced a nice tom into a flapping, thrashing heap. 10" beard. And me, being at the time a city boy, thought it didn't look as big as our farm grown Thanksgiving turkey. Ha! Couldn't do it again if I tried. We need to hear about everyone's most embarassing, horrific failures. I have some ugly ones.

One more. I s sitting in a little box blind that looked down a secluded little road. To my left, there was a 1500 yards sendero that stretched down to the Big Oatfield. I saw nothing down the road, but I could see deer coming out into the oatfield. I was bored (and young and stupid) so I tried to follow parallel to the sendero down to the oats. I got lost. I went off at an angle and ended up a half mile away. I was walking along and I heard movement. Being young and dumb I had visions of being mauled by a cougar or the bad guy from the movie Predator or something. A spike ran from my back to front, 50 yds to my right. I swung my .270 up and whacked him as soon as he cleared some brush. I ran over to him and cursed (I could have sworn he had more points) and tried to find my way out. I finally did, walked back to the truck and searched all over, but never found him. He was dead as a mackerel when I left him, so I guess I gave the coyotes a treat. I feel horrible. I'll do better for my kids than giving them a gun and turning them loose like my old man did me.

Ok, last one. About 2 years ago, my neighbor and I were out scouting and checking feeders on the ranch(middle of August). We came to the top of this big hill that you can't come in 2WD. There were a half dozen hogs in the middle of the road 165 yds away. I didn't have my gun, so my buddy shoved his over to me"shoot one!" Now this cat spends money on his gear, custom build 25.06 w/ Zeiss scope. Off hand down hill 165yds right behind the ear. She ran across to the left, back to the right and I popped her in the middle of the road.
