RE: If you could buy a new whitetail gun...
I would have to follow trophyhuntr on this and go with a new customized Remington 700 Sendero in .270 or 7mm with a Leupold VXIII scope. Then I would spend the rest on hunting clothes and accessories. Maybe a nice sling to tote the heavy gun with.
My second choice in rifle would be the Winchester Mod. 70 Stealth in .308 with a "top-of-the-line" tactical scope.

Remington Model 7 in 7-08 with a Leupold or Burris variable scope and aftermarket trigger set at 3 lbs.
I love my Rem. 700 .270, but a light, short rifle would find it's way into the woods quite frequently, I believe.

I love my Winchester model70 with pre 64 action.
I have a 300 Win Mag stainless Winchester model 70 in the new claw/pre64 action. My scope is a German Doctor Optics(best scope i've seen at any price). The gun shoots sub 1 1/2" groups at 200Yards with Winchester and Remington soft point ammo. I was going to reload my ammo but what would be the point?. I amazed several 308 reload shooters on its accuracy with lo-end ammo. I beat the hell out of this gun this year and it still looks new and shoots dead on. It shoots better than my old 7mm SAKO75 Hunter and I used realoads with it.
