Personally I have never seen this happen before, but have heard about it. We have a late season here in Nebraska, doe only. If that is happening there, I wonder how much of an impact it could have on the January hunt here in Nebraska. We could have even less deer next year.
Have you had a lot of snow and for quite some time. Sometimes if you get a long stretch of cold weather, it can trigger that kind of situation. If it has been in the 50-60's, that would be a very good question.

Nope never heard that one before, great story and congrats.
I did hear a story about a guy who shot a buck last jan. in a CWD hunt he went to drag the buck by the horns and fell forward face into the snow because they detached....oh did I LMAO after hearing that story.
*****Disclaimer: the story was told to me by someone other than the lucky hunter himself, so I haven't been able to verify the Authenticity at this time, please treat as a rumor*****
WR, he never said estimated on the spread just the age. I'll assume his taxi put the antlers back in the pocket, being fresh this is a reasonable assumption and came up with his spread measurement as more precise. Note: A good taxi can take a set of sheds and come with a reasonably accurate spread measurement for mounting/scoring so why would one assume it isn't possible to do so for the actual animal the sheds/antlers came from...he did mention a taxi was involved. Just some food for thought

No B.S I got the spread measurement from the Taxidermist. Heres how...
When we reviewed the antlers they were 1/2 way starting to shed. The antlers were jagged on their bottoms where they were attached to the head. The shot impact jared them lose. They only fit one way on the head like a puzzle. If you try to turn them in or out they dont fit. I got the same measurement as my Taxidermist did. The antlers were on the deer when I first saw the deer. I took a neck shot and the deer flipped backwards. When My father-in-law and I got to the deer I noticed the Deer didnt have any antlers on it. We both noticed both antlers were laying neatly in front of the deer where I shot it.
I got some great photos of the deer and the story at www.Pa bucks.com
Look under the city of Laport Pa. Story is intitled "Where did the antlers go"
Maybe somone could add a quick link to the story.
