Default Dumping the carcass by the road.

Went hunting Saturday and when I pulled into the litle parking spot right off the road, I imediately saw the skinned out, butchered ribcage and hyde of a deer. When I was leaving I walked over and took a closer look. it was a doe. It's possible it was there all week since doe day was a week before. There was most of a tag on a string hanging around it's neck which tells me that it wasn't checked. They take your tag when you check it. I saw an older guy dragging a nice 8 point buck out of the woods when I showed up late on opening day. He then pulled out a gambral and started walking toward the tree line, deer in tow. I thought it was a little odd but I was in a hurry to get out there myself. Later I thought more about it and realized that this meant he didn't check that deer either. I really do not like the way they dumped the carcass there at the edge of the parking area. I can understand that some people might not have a place to process the deer at home but it should definately be checked and the remains should absolutely never be dumped there on the side of the road.
Especially in easy sight of the road. This sort of stupidity can really damage the image of hunters. Had to get it off my chest. also want to get the oppinion of some other hunters. If you don't check the deer is that still poaching even if you use a tag on it?

David, I agree it ain't a very smart or responsible move on the hunters part. If the deer are required to be checked at a deer station in your area, then yes it would be illegal and considered poaching of sorts. If it is suggested, meaning they would like for you to check a deer in but not required it is not.

Here we don't have check station but the disposal of carcasses and hides in a public place is illegal..not poaching persay but against the law. You could inform the GW about the site and maybe ask for clarifaction at the same time.

i agree 100%, its nothing but lazy to drop a carcass on the side of the road for all to see. i cut the rib cage in half and bag it in a hefty bag to be taken to the land fill . at the least you could drag it back up into the woods where it came from !

I have no problem with someone disposing a carcass back in the woods as long as they have the landowners permission, but leaving a carcass on the side of the road or in a field is dirt bag!!!! I give mine to my dogs, the only person upset by this is my wife when the dogs want to bring it in the house!

Yes, tagging without actually checking is poaching. You're right to be angry about this kind of behavior.

I would call your local G.W. I know out here it is e-legal to not properly
dispose of the carcas. And if it was supposed to be checked in, why didnt he
do that. Maybe the game warden can find out from the info that was left on
the tag. JMO

That just makes me sick! To me, it's definitely poaching. Here in Nebraska this last season, I saw where someone had shot a buck, cut off the head and left the body of the deer laying right beside the road. About ten years ago, I had seen someone with just the head in the back of a truck, while he was filling up with gas, then I drove to the WMA and saw the body of a deer decapitated. My guess is that it was the rest of the deer that I saw in the guys truck.

It really makes us honest, hard-working hunters look bad. No wonder why some animal rights activists have a problem with hunters. We all need to appreciate the wildlife that we do hunt and make sure that we don't waste the meat. Isn't that part of the real trohpy anyway...a full freezer? Bare minimum, you could donate the meat to the homeless or to shelters.

Sorry, enough of my soapbox speech.

I've seen carcasses dumped on our hunting property near the road. Makes me mad and wouldn't do it myself. Here in MI it is encouraged to check a deer, but not mandatory. These check stations are only set up during the two weeks of firearm season I believe. I've never checked a deer. I bought the tag, put it on the deer, I'm legal. If it were mandatory, I would check the deer, but since it's not, no harm done by not.

I work for the city here and last week some dirt bag dumped a gut pile and carcass in an alley. I had to pick the damn thing up, guts were even there still. I sure wish people would THINK before they dump off a crcass anywhere they please.[:@][:'(]
I dont mind seeing the mess left in the bush, usually the yotes and birds have it cleaned up in 24 hours.

Wouldn't it be great if we could find out who these hogs are and leave our next gut pile on their front steps?

Just musing, Clint
