hunting as a old man
I am young and have alot energy. Being out in the woods all day. Hanging stands and scouting I do tend to get a little tried. I was wondering for you old guys. You just dont have the energy to do everything. How do you do it?

Old Guys,[8D]
WE are like the turtle and the rabbit. We pace ourselves!;) |
RE: hunting as a old man
Who you calling old, deerhunter????!!!!!!:D
For me, it's not so much getting older as it is getting fatter!:D Or is that just getting older? Just drug a 150# buck out of the woods last week about 300 yards to the truck. I stopped A LOT along the way (and my wife was helping me drag it too!) |
RE: hunting as a old man
Well lets see, To start with some of us old guys don't have that pesky thing called work to contend with. And when it comes to the work of hunting ,and there is some hard work to it You do have to pace yourself. The secret to it is to except that in some cases you need a little help and you just do one thing at a time. Time is something I do have plenty of. I try to shoot my big game in the morning so I have the whole day to get it drug out and skinned and quartered up and stuff. Got to just relax and realize you need to take it easy. My wife does help me a lot in my older years. However she now expects me to cook and do dishes.:) I got them all done for today already.

RE: hunting as a old man
See while us young guys dont know alot of where to hunt & how to hunt & make it right, old timers do. They dont have to walk as much as us to find a deer spot. They know what to hunt, how to hunt it & when to hunt it. Not saying younger hunters dont just saying we cant as well as the older hunters.

RE: hunting as a old man
I'll be 52 in July. I still run 3 miles on 3-4 days per week....even in the winter. You gatta stay in shape to enjoy your hunting to the fullest. I really don't know what you are talking about. You say hanging stands and scouting make you tired. I can't imagine that. Why?...that's recreation, man!...and you're just a kid yet!

Well you little snotty nose brat, if you stay active and take care of your body when you are young will determine your health later. Abuse your body and your going to pay the dues. Another reason brat that you may be lacking energy is, are you eating the right energy food, or are you eating junk foods and wonder why you don't have enough energy? Bobby 12*15*53

I would have to say when you are in your 60's and 70's.

RE: hunting as a old man
i am 62 and semi-retired.i work weekends and hunt mon-thurs and find it difficult to get up and hunt on sat/sun due to getting off work at 11.00pm.i work 28 hours on fri/sat/sun and that takes a little wind out of my sails.however,i still pull a 70# bow, muzzleload and rifle hunt for deer and also do a lot of walking while turkey hunting.i am old by some standards, but will continue to do what i love as long as my health will allow.i generally will take a good buck each year, pass up what most will shoot and get my limit of gobblers each spring.life is good for us OLD folks.;)

RE: hunting as a old man
I am 60. I am in better shape now that about three years ago. Bad heart attack during cancer surgery. I survived both but boy the come back was slow. It took a couple years to get back to the strength I had before the event. My goal is to be in much better shape next year. I am just getting back to where I can work out a little. I can walk a couple miles again but climbing the canyons in the river breaks where I hunt is probably a thing of the past.

RE: hunting as a old man
I'm waiting to break the kids into doing the heavy load. Driving/dragging, etc...
In the meantime, I take my time, fits quite nicely into still hunting. Of course I can't get up before dawn, hunt all day, hit the bars till closing, and then do it again the next day anymore, but I'm OK with that. |

Tim The one thing we learn with age also is that your kids need to learn how to drag a deer out, gut it, hang it and skin it!! This is crucial, it will extend the old mans hunting time right up until the bitter end!!!!:D |

You're my hero Taz ! I couldn't have said it better .

RE: hunting as a old man
They get us younger guys to do it! :D And if you pick some knowledge up along the way than all the better.
And whatever doesn't get done today well it will get done tomorrow or the day after that.;) Crawdaddy |
RE: hunting as a old man
I agree they creatively get the younger guys to end up doing it. I'm not sure how but they always manage to. Our little hunting group is split between older and younger. Actually I'm not sure where I fall. 31?? Anyway I'm considered the youngin. Couple of ways they do it:
"I'm going to do some target practice then run to the store to get you guys some lunch. How about hanging that stand near the soybean field and by that time I'll be back to help you with the one that has to go over to the corn field"? Sure. Good one Dad. After 5 hours of hanging stands, miraculously his truck pulls into the driveway and walking into the house with subs as we're getting back. Watch out for the crafty veterans too. Here's a quick story I posted before. I was getting down from my stand one night(after dark). Get to the bottom of my stand and a giant buck is 30 yards from me. I sat there and watched him pass although I could've shot him seeing as how it was bright as could be with the full moon. My father witnessed the whole thing from about 60 yards away. He told me how proud he was and I did a very ethical and great thing letting him pass because it was after shooting =hours. 3 days later he takes a the same giant out of the same stand!! Now that I look back on it he had a funny smerk on his face when he was giving me props for letting him pass. Of course I did a great thing cause he knew he was going to get him. |
RE: hunting as a old man
The younger hunters that I have met are a good bunch. They are more than willing to help us older guys out. I used to do the same. Im glad to see some traditions continue.

RE: hunting as a old man
62, semi-retired and loving it.
Just had my annual checkup, cholestral is down to 158 and BP 116/64. It seems the more I hunt the better shape I'm in! |
RE: hunting as a old man
[8D] Deerhunter1224, I'm 53 and carry the mail for my wages. For years now I've been hiking my butt off, toting heavy crates, boxes etc.. Climbing umteen million steps, you get the picture. I consider my treks to the woods as mental therapy and a walk in the park. Ok, guys/gals please no going postal jokes or I'll have to take another sedative and walk into the whitetail kingdom. They understand me and don't talk back too much!!

RE: hunting as a old man
My old butt has a 28 year old hunting pardner that's still full of pi$$ and vinegar, I'm just full of pi$$. He does the hard stuff and I pay for whatever we have to buy.
I also bought a 4 wheeler to haul my deer out. I also take an aleve before I hunt and two after I hunt. Seriously, I can still do most anything I set my mind to, I just do it alot slower. |
