Old Timers... Help?
 

Why is it that a deer back east (east of the Mississippi?) with 8 points
on his rack is called an 8 pointer. And a deer out west (West of the River?)
is called a 4X4. I was wondering why this is and where or when it originated.

I thought maybe some of you old time hunters could help me out?

im from california and ive always called it an 8 pointer. a 4x4 is the vehicel you drive to get to your hunting spot.

The sides of my truck say "4x4" and I'm certain it's not referring to deer.

Isn't there some parts (Montana, Canada...??) that consider an 8pt. a 4pt. by only counting one side?

I have no idea either, but Iveheard the same when refering to elk, got me. Im stumped!

In Oregon we refer to them as a 4X4. Thats the same way they do in
Colorado and Washinton also.

I have talked ot other guys from Cali that refer to Blacktails they get
as a 4X4 or 3X3 or whatever, but never a 8 point.

Currently in Livingston County north of Brighton (M-59 & US-23 area). Lot's of big deer around here it seems. Just moved here. Grew up in Oxford (1/2 hour N of Pontiac) out in the sticks. We have hunting property in Harrison.

i have heard many people call thier blacktails 4x4 & 3x3 etc. but never whitetails or anything. If that helps.....

Here in Alberta we also use the side x side method, it gives the listener a more accurate detail of the rack. ie what some would call a 13 pt. buck I'd call a 6 x 7 or a 5 x 8. just more details for a clearer picture.

Actually a lot of those "Old Boys" out yonder never got beyond about the second grade or so and the higher math involved in adding up the sum of the two sides just never registered. They could get up to ten O.K. by just using their fingers (unless they had been involved in a roping accident or something) but putting the whole thing together just couldn't happen. Therefore, certain areas of the country are now stuck with this archaic system by which antler sizes/count must be thrown out there for the rest of us to do the higher math.....Now, where the Hell did I put my calculator???
