new to board, have some questions
I' ve been deer hunting for 20 yrs. and I' ve hunted them nearly every legal way there is. I' ve had my most success hunting from a tree stand. I mainly hunt out of homemade ladder stands, both wood and metal. Heights are 10' -16' . I also have a warren and sweat climbing stand that I use a few times each year. Usually 15' is the minimum height I climb with it. I have killed deer out of every stand I own, even the 10' ers. How high do you guys hunt? I like to get as high as I can but some areas I hunt don' t have trees that I can climb very high or the trees there aren' t big enough to support a stand taller than 10" . Thanks,

RE: new to board, have some questions
Welcome lswoody!
I' ve been hunting many moons and generally hunt around 16-18' up the tree. I do have one stand right now that is 22' , but I wouldn' t personally want to go higher because of the angle of the shot. I' ve generally found that deer look up quite a bit regardless if you are 10' or 25' . If you don' t move, doesn' t matter if you' re on the ground or 30' up. My $.02 anyway. |
RE: new to board, have some questions
Welcome.
I actually hunt deer mostly at 0 feet from the ground;). However when I do use a stand for bear and the odd time for other game I hang it 15-18 feet high. Biggest thing is backing, so don' t go to high or to low to give away your location, deer can pick off outlines and silhoutttes very good. |
RE: new to board, have some questions
I agree, I' m a 15 to 20 foot guy. I have a tough time with the angle any higher and I' m not that confident up there for some reason. I do a lot of natural ground blind hunting as well. Wind and movement are key to me!!
