They were resting, maybe chewing their cud, etc... Deer usually spend days in heavy cover then move to open feeding areas at night. They don' t spend the entire night time feeding. That would be a lot of food. But they do frequently spend the dark hours in open areas bedded down.

i noticed this also the other night coming home from the woods, driving down the road when 3 deer were just bedding about 5 feet from the road, luckily they went back into the feild instead of in front of me

I get deer in my back yard every night, helps that I plant Biologic and Rye grass but still they come in every night and quite often lay down for a while.

The ones at home are the pets and the ones on the ranch go to the freezer.

the deer in my neck of the woods will bed down in the alfalfa field not further than 50 yards from the house, saw a lot of them yesterday out in the field with several lying down, before deer season you can get within 50 yards before they even get up let alone run off

RE: deer laying in the grass

I was headed home from a morning hunt a couple weeks ago and saw 2 does bedded down in grass that was knee high at best right on the side of the road in the WMA. This was at like 1 pm! I saw the 2 brown lumps from a distance but couldnt really tell that it was deer. As I got close enough to see them they got up and just trotted across the road and off into the brush. If I only had a doe tag.....
