20ga for deer?

I bought my grandson a new 20ga.for deer hunting. It' s not a rifled barrel, but will it shoot rifled slugs?I' ve bought him just about every deer hunting shell I can get him so we can try them.#2' s 2 3/4in.,#3' s 3in. and slugs in 2 3/4in.Which one do you think will work best?

the 3" slugs should do the trick. took my 1st caribou in alaska with a 20 gauge slug, and have killed a number of deer with it also. good starter gun Steve

RE: 20ga for deer?

I' m figuring out the same question. My son actually figured it out for me though. He has been shooting, quite well I might add, for some time. He is ten years old and is a big ten year old. 5' and about 110lbs. Out of his 20 ga. 870 youth, he shoots 3" #4 for ducks and geese. He shoots 3" #2 buck in a nice pattern out to 35 or 40 yards and he shoots high brass #6 for small game. He wont shoot the slugs because they kick too much. I can' t see the difference between them and the #2 buck or the duck loads but this is his thing. I have to just work harder to get the deer closer for his buck shot loads.

Good job getting another kid into hunting. My dad gave my son his 870 youth for his ninth birthday. You grandads are great!
