RE: How should the ratio of female/male deer be?
In the area of Texas that I hunt, the Texas hill country, the deer are at or beyond the carrying capacity of the land most of the time. This varies from about a deer per 5 acres to a deer per 15 acres. When you have that many deer, I feel that a ratio approaching a 1:1 doe/buck ratio is ideal. I shoot for 1.5 does/1 buck on my ranch.
However, if you are talking about areas of low deer density, then you probably need more does than that to protect you from a severe winter that might wipe the females out. I don' t think mule deer do well at a 1:1 ratio either, probably due to winter loses.
