RE: Anyone recommend a good knife?
I have 3 knives that I use. An Old Timer 3" lockblade for gutting. I have a Wyoming Knife for skinning. This is a specially designed razor blade that has a handle designed for it. It has holes for your fingers, and it is the best I have found to skin a deer with. When the razor blade wears out you replace it. I also have a Cutco knife that will cut through tough cartilage like in the ribs and such to break them open. I also have a Gerber 2 in 1 saw that I use and a Wyoming Saw. I also have a Gerber tool, but don' t use that knife very much.

Folding Buck Knife with the green plastic handle. Holds an edge that you can shave with.

RE: Anyone recommend a good knife?
I have an A.G. Russel Deer Hunter and I like it so much I also bought the smaller version the bird & trout knife. It' s light weight & durable and at $50 or under, if I loose it I won' t be out big bucks.

RE: Anyone recommend a good knife?
I have the Seal Pup by SOG, I have cleaned/skinned 4 deer with it so far and it is still cutting great. It still shaves arm hair. If you go to Cabelas.com and type in SOG in the search box it will bring it up. It is about $55. Great knife.
I also agree with the others about the Lansky sharpener. I spent $20 and every knife I own you can shave with. It is easy to use and you can' t screw it up. |
RE: Anyone recommend a good knife?
Any 2-bladed Swiss Army knife by Wenger or Victorinox. Razor-sharp in seconds on a steel, a stone will make them downright dangerous.
I also use a rubber handled Kershaw for gutting, has a 3.5 inch half-serrated blade, the rubber helps with the slippery situation. S&R |
RE: Anyone recommend a good knife?
Another vote for the Cutco. After gutting and skinning an elk, I could still shave with it. Almost took the tip of my thumb off with it, and didn' t even notice. I DID however, fry up some flesh with some bacon once. Oops.
